Available in 4 different flavours:

kernel-nrj-desktop > for 64bit and 32bit multimedia desktop, 32bit is limited using not more than 3 Gb ram,
kernel-nrj-pae-desktop > exclusively for 32bit (NOT 64!), when you have more than 3 Gb ram (upto 64Gb),
kernel-desktop,
kernel-server.

Please, avoid to install and use kernel-desktop, use instead NRJ or NRJ-PAE!
kernel-desktop config, we found it's very unresponsive for desktop and multimedia apps:
so we accept feedbacks only for -NRJ and -NRJ-PAE, and eventually -server (for server)

I remember you that:

recent versions of vmware7.1.3/vmplayer3.1.3 need some patch to build & work properly
recent proprietary drivers (ati 8.821) or some wi-fi could have problems with kernel 2.6.38

There is not official vmware software version or patch to build & work against kernel 2.6.38.xx

I found in the web, two different solutions coming from community users:
Solution 1 > Patch prepared for previous kernel 2.6.37 that unmodified seems working also for kernel 2.6.38
Solution 2 > Patch for 2.6.38, replacing deprecated lock_kernel/unlock_kernel functions with private mutexes.

I tried and tested successfully 2>, so I suggest that and go to explain

Solution 2>

Download (click right button) and Save these two files in your Home user folder

- Open a root konsole/terminal

Installed kernel-nrj-desktop 32bit (nvidia260.19.44) without errors.
New kernel works fine and fast.

sto provando il nuovo kernel, ma all'avvio in Kernel modesetting mi si blocca con un scherno nero prima del caricamento del KDE, quando avvene la "scalatura" dei caratteri...

Second test
Installation kernel-nrj-desktop 32bit on laptop eMashines E725:
- Process instalation without errors
- Trouble on boot

(No LCD Backlight) - default booting without changing any kernel parameters. Problem like this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10591451 (include some solutions - non tested)

p.s. kernel-nrj-desktop 2.6.36.4(and earlier) worked fine on this laptop

Laptop pc very often have problems related to acpi

You can try the solutions present in ubuntu forum, one at a time, adding all kernel parameters safely:
at boot pressing F3 Mandriva shows a line where you can add some test (a parameter) and press Enter

When and if you find the right parameter to switch on backlight, you can add the right parameter, editing the file
/boot/grub/menu.lst
add the working parameter into the kernel line for right kernel and save it

At the reboot, the kernel 2.6.38 would start with the parameter specified by you.

Installato senza alcun problema, tutto ok anche su wmware.
Molto più veloce, complimenti a Nicco anche per l'ottima guida.
