Penso che i driver 290.10 con la tua scheda abbiano qualche tipo di incompatibilità

quando è stato portato il nuovo xorg sono stati preparati due differenti versioni di driver nvidia 290 e 295

trovi una cartelle con i driver nvidia 295.05, che sono gli ultimi beta, preparati per il nuovo server grafico
nella cartella xorg ho preferito mettere i driver stabili 290.10, ma se a te vanno male puoi provare i 295.09

Attenzione: non ci sono liste media_info, ci sono solo i files rpm, spero che tu possa installarli lo stesso.

Stai usando i driver dei rpm MIB, vero? Perché altrimenti è abbastanza ovvio che qualcosa non funzioni...
E poi: 290.10 o 295.09? Se stai usando i primi, potresti provare i secondi... (sul contrario non ci scommetterei troppo, ma forse potrebbe valer la pena di tentare dato che il 295 è solo una beta...).
Verificherei anche che l'eventuale update dei driver preesistenti abbia effettivamente aggiornato tutto quel che doveva...
in particolare verificherei che sia stato rebuildato il modulo del kernel (dkms-nvidia-current-xxx).

Dai sintomi sembrerebbe esserci qualche problema con l'accelerazione...
Strano però che non vi siano messaggi di errore nei file di log:
almeno gli errori con gli effetti del desktop (di Kwin, suppongo) dovrebbero lasciar traccia almeno nel fille nascosto
xsession-errors che trovi nella Home dell'utente che stai usando quando si verificano detti errori.

A 'sto punto direi che serve sapere un po' tutto quanto: versioni installate di libdrm, mesa e driver video, contenuto di /var/log/dmesg e /var/log/Xorg.0.log, output del comando glxinfo (in una konsole)...

I driver 280.xx non erano compatibili con ABI 11 del nuovo server Xorg 1.11.3
la prima serie dei driver nvidia con ABI compatibili dovrebbe essere la 285.xx

questi non sono stati preparati, ma che nel caso che anche i beta vadano male, potrebbe essere possibile cercare e pacchettizzare 285.xx, o meglio aspettare che i 295.xx si evolvano alla versione stabile e certificata.

Con i driver beta invece, il pc stenta ad avviarsi, e una volta avviato si blocca completamente.

Queste due righe probabilmente corrispondono al momento del problema (sì?)...
Googlando con "NVIDIA(0): WAIT" si trovano varie soluzioni (anche recenti, tipo questa:

che suggeriscono di aggiungere al proprio xorg.conf la seguente riga:

Magari ti aiuta (io non so dire: sono con una ATI/AMD HD5750...).

Con Mandriva 2010.2 x86_64 + Xorg 1.11.3 + KDE 4.5.5 + kdm -> X non parte al avio

Confermo problema segnalato da Maurice

per la prima volta, ieri sera, ho installato xorg 1.11.3 anche su 2010.2 64:
adesso non parte più il KDM, ma ho un messaggio di localhost login ] $ _

se mi loggo come user, dopo digito

startx

il kde 4.5.5 parte e tutto funziona

C'è bisogno di una patch che ripristina l'opzione obsoleta "-nr" per il server 1.11.3...
I rpm corretti sono già in lavorazione.

UPDATE: I rpm per 2010.2 & 2011.0 sono stati inviati a NicCo per la messa on-line.

Adesso il KDM parte, e anche il KDE in automatico, ma di 3D neanche l'ombra...

Il problema è proprio quello segnalato da Maurice
Per il dmesg e Xorg.0.log mi dispiace: Il limite massimo di allegati impostato è stato raggiunto.
Ricordo che vi era questo problema, quando portarono xorg 10 su 2011 beta... e lo risolsero in qualche modo
