Mandriva 2011 will support Hybrid Graphics, it seems NO...?

Post by NicCo »

Although the number of hardware already in and out with Hybrid Graphics,
it seems that Mandriva 2011 there will be NO support ... or at least nothing can be perceived if they really intend to do something about it ...

I brought this issue to the attention of at least two months, but I have not seen any progress, apart port of the new X. Org server (1.10.x), which was an important part of the problem, but only a part.
Now we need to support the solution through a
  • Vga_switcheroo, in kernel modules
  • Bumblebee, for Nvidia Optimus
  • a proper management tool that allows dual GPUs.
I hope I am wrong, and Mandriva is quietly working on this very important key!

If they will not do something for the Hybrid Graphics,
Mandriva 2011 will be totally impossible in 50% of laptop computers on the market now, and you could install it only on old Laptop PCs

I just received, within minutes of my email, response from Eugeni
I take this opportunity to thank him to read and listen to us users!
Hi,

to support hybrid graphics, it is necessary to have at least some
hardware with such features, and we do not have any of these video cards
here in Conectiva or in France :(.

If such machines pop up in the office, I'll try to add support to them;
but I cannot promise it right now...

Kudos to Eugeni and for his hard work in renewing and improving our loved distro.

Whatever the reasons, forgive me, I think nevertheless this is a ridiculous reply, not worthy of him.
(I'd say worthy of the "good old" P.R. management... but now let's forget  )

We place great hopes on new Mandriva management and engineering.

With all my appreciation,

We don't know if Mandriva 2011 will have Hybrid Graphics support or not, but we fear no!
I have pushed for this cause, since several months, with the risk of sounding a nuisance...

In my opinion this could be the most crazy and foolish aspect in Mandriva 2011 since almost 50% of new PC are Hybrid Graphics...
Perhaps they don't know very well the market of nowdays PCs, or they are blind, or they think to support only all older machines

I am also sad  because I have not seen many other users insist on support to Hybrid Graphics for Mandriva 2011
As soon as they buy their next PCs, they will realize that they will not be able to put Mandriva on the new machines...

In Kubuntu 11.04 there is not direct support via GUI to Hybrid Graphics, but you can manually setup all to work properly.
I was already forced, much to my chagrin, to install Kubuntu 11.04 on a Dell XPS 17 (Optimus), to a friends of mine...
