firefox window goes black or grey

Post by forrestw517 »

If you try and use firefox 3.6 either the background goes fully black or has black or grey bars going across it. I can only use firefox 4.0beta to get around it. any suggestions?

No, it does not exists the problem you say for good installations: never seen!
perhaps you moved from an older version series to a newer, or you have some bad working extension:
when problems happen it's much safer to rename or delete config folder to avoid strange side-effect and retry

the Mozilla config folder is located:

Code: Select all

/home/user/.mozilla

There is an issue with the ATI Catalyst drivers versions 10.6 to 10.8 and the new 2D driver
that can cause the blackscreen issues you are describing. It is fixed in the new 10.9 drivers released by AMD a few day ago..

It affected all browsers not just Firefox, also affected was Thunderbird and even some other desktop applications.

The fix for the afflicted Cat drivers was to force it to use the old XAA driver instead of the new 2D one. Booting into failsafe mode (init 3) or logging out and killing the xserver the as root issue aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE and rebooting or starting x
would fix it.

I highly recommend using the new Cat 10.9 driver though and it works well with Adobe's
pre-release Flashplayr (square) http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/
