It would be nice if there were mod_clamav packages for installation alongside apache/proftp on mandriva rather than having to patch and recompile.

We cannot help you:
Apache is very important package and we'll have to follow it's security mail lists, release security-fixed packages etc.

I guess it's better not to touch it at all.

You should rather talk to the mandriva official package maintainer.
