new arch x32

Post by promeneur »

with kernel 3.4 there is a new arch the x32 one
much more fast than the x86

see a good review here

https://linuxfr.org/news/sortie-officie ... -3-4#toc_9https://linuxfr.org/news/sortie-officielle-du-noyau-linux-3-4#toc_9

in this review it is said that today it is almost absurd to use a x86 distribution and some test show x32 is faster than x86_64 !

for a complete doc see

I can't speak for Nicco (our kernel guru... :-) ) but IMO, it is a little too soon to contemplate this move:
the x32 ABI needs support not only from the kernel, but also from glibc and binutils and/or modutils (at least);
while the latest kernels have the needed support, that is still lacking on the other levels...

We will have to wait until all the pieces are in place and (more over) well tested, because a such radical change can easily break the whole OS.
