Kernel 3.4.4 for Mandriva 2010.2 2011.0 ROSA 2012 2012.1

Post by NicCo »

Kernel 3.4.4 LTS for Mandriva 2010.2 2011.0 and ROSA 2012.0 2012.1

I'm working for Kernel 3.4.4 just now, so it should be available in few days, after some testing...
from kernel 3.4.3 to 3.4.4 there are many differences and many new patches from stable queue

Code: Select all

%changelog
* Wed Jul 11 2012 Nicolo' Costanza <abitrules@yahoo.it> 3.4.4-1mib
- update to 3.4.4
- add a patch from stable queue requested by GvM (MIB) on MIB ML:
- mm-correctly-synchronize-rss-counters-at-exit-exec.patch
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Yin & Yang (69) release - a very complete kernel flavour serie
- Kernel 3.4 for mdv 2010.2, 2011.0, cooker, rosa.lts2012.0, rosa2012.1
- MIB (Mandriva International Backports) - http://mib.pianetalinux.org/
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Work in progress...

New Kernel LTS 3.4.4
This is the second 3.4.x version prepared by MIB for Mandriva and ROSA linux

Availability
In progress!

Builds
rpms for 2011 and 2012 2012.1 are clean build in ABF, rpms for 2010 are built in personal VM 2010.2

Testing status:
in Mandriva 2010.2 x64 and x32, it install, works and performs nice

Code: Select all

utente ~/Documenti $ cat /etc/product.id && uname -a
vendor=Mandriva,distribution=Mandriva Linux,type=Basic,version=2010.2,branch=Official,release=1,arch=x86_64,product=Powerpack
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.4.4-nrj-desktop-1mib #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jul 12 01:51:00 CEST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Some problems in 2011 and 2012 could still occour by dracut remaining problems with installation and update,
these problems if / when happen are not our fault, because aren't related to the kernel contents or packaging...

It's a known issue
Old proprietary ATI driver works only with kernel upto 3.3.x
New proprietary ATI driver works starting from HD 5xxx cards
ATI seems abandoning all video cards pre 5xxx, so it's a MESS

Kernel 3.4.4 with nvidia current cards:
Today I installed kernel 3.4.4 on a fresh installed ROSA 2012 MARATHON x64
all was ok with nuveau driver, for proprietary driver I had to install v. 295.59
(Tomorow I'd prepare nvidia 295.59 as i had some problems with beta driver)

I confirm that no fglrx module is loaded with kernel 3.4x standard and nrj version on rosa LTS X64, even if the hardware detection tool detects it

Ok! But I'm missing something! The video card is the same, even the ATI driver, just change the kernel. So logic would dictate that the problem is the kernel and not from ATI! But surely I'm missing something!

In my previous msg, I suggested this reading about ATI situation

More info:

Catalyst 12.6 legacy beta news:
- supports Radeons HD 2xxx 3xxx 4xxx ONLY
- supports 3.4 kernel;
- supports xorg-server 1.12
- it includes OpenCL binaries for the SDK;

Catalyst 12.6 stable news:
- supports Radeons HD >= 5xxx
- supports 3.4 kernel (through patches);
- supports xorg-server 1.12
- it includes OpenCL binaries for the SDK;
- GNOME3 support does look good;
- KDE's direct rendering does work without tearing;

dkms-nvidia-current failed to install with kernel 3.4.4.
Both on Mandriva 2011 and Rosa 2012 lts (64bits).

MauRice
By the way, why it 'push' to install the kernel-nrj-desktop when I have the kernel-desktop installed.

The working Nvidia driver version is 295.59
I'll prepare soon these drivers and I'll copy on the same folders
MauRice wrote:By the way, why it 'push' to install the kernel-nrj-desktop when I have the kernel-desktop installed.
the metapackages (-latest) now are forwarding directly to -nrj flavours, in the same way that was decided for rosa 2012lts

Nicco,
My FirePro 7800 is compatible with catalyst 12.6 stable as the GPU is the Radeon HD 5850.
Check this link

Moreover the driver is listed in the downloadable list of AMD:
Check this LINK

So I guess that it should work.

3.4.4 is not a progress for 2010.2 32 bit

- mandriva net applet does not display any message from mandi
- bluedevil does not detect any bluetooth adapter

in the contrary of 3.2.18

I agree with you that kernel 3.2.x is the best serie available for mdv 2010.x branch:
we consider kernel 3.2 the one for 2010.3 branch, as you can see in 2010.3 /experts

About Kernel 3.4.x, we try to do our best to support the most users possible, and
you must consider that some users don't need mandi & bluetooth, i don't use them

If kernel 3.4.x is too new for 2010.x, I have planned to port also kernel 3.3.8 (EOL)

We are preparing just now kernel 3.2.23 containing many fixes and improvments.
