TEST & FEEDBACK

Hardware:
1) pentium4 3Ghz
2) 2Gb di ram
3) video nvidia con 256 Mb fino a 512 in condivisione con quella del PC
4) audio intel integrato
5) HD esterno USB (quello interno è scassato)
Software:
1) ROSA-RP1
2) jackd+pulseaudio+gstreamer

Sorry, I clicked on the link ABF directly from the email you had sent yesterday

As I wanted to try this kernel first on a fresh install of ROSA RM 2012 inder VirtualBox, I never thought I'd meet a dependency problem with microcode

The test seems conclusive in VirtualBox, I'll install it ASAP on real partition after making backup.

Our fist tests, full promoted laptop, realtime and workstation, and their PAE versions (we'll add the missing PAE versions)

- kernel-nrj-laptop
it's very reactive, even better than nrj-.desktop, at the same time it warrants better energy using so battery can lasts much longer

- kernel-nrj-realtime
it's very reactive, perfectly playing audio studio contents for MIDI and DAW applications and the same for any general multimedia

- kernel-nrj-workstation
it's similar to previous nrj-desktop of whose represents the perfect replacement, but this last one is notably more reactive and faster

About:

- kernel-nrj-multimedia
it's behaviour and performances are too close to nrj-workstation, so this flavour may be useless and probably will be cut

- kernel-nrj-studio
it's behaviour and performances are too close to nrj-realtime, so this flavour may be useless and probably will be cut

About:
- kernel-nrj-server
- kernel-nrj-gameserver

these are being tested just now in our labs, we need more time to make comparisons, we have no data about, still now

bye, NicCo

New experimental kernel flavours are available for MDV 2011, RM 2012 and ROSA 2012.1
and now also for MDV 2010

The path for MDV2011, RM 2012 and ROSA 2012.1

After kernel 3.5.3, will be refined, I wish adding other things inside
(aufs, overlayfs, and many others, I'll go on with previous kernels,
I'll prepare the same for other kernel versions: 3.4, 3.3, 3.2, 3.1, 3.0

now, I'm waiting for Your precious testing and the feedback...

Mandriva 2010.2 i586
kernel 3.5.3nrng pae workstation

in the contrary of 3.1.6 :

-webcam does not work

with cheeze i have a black screen
with kopete i have the camera icon

cheeze settings : "camera(/dev/video0)" and no other choice
kopete settings : "camera" and no other choice

in phonon settings in "video capture" there is : "/dev/video0"

with 3.1.6 in phonon settings in "video capture" there is also : "/dev/video0"

i found messages in kernel error log :
........
Sep 16 09:33:53 localhost kernel: gspca: ISOC data error: [2] len=0, status=-18
Sep 16 09:33:53 localhost kernel: gspca: ISOC data error: [10] len=0, status=-18
Sep 16 09:33:53 localhost kernel: gspca: ISOC data error: [18] len=0, status=-18
Sep 16 09:33:53 localhost kernel: gspca: ISOC data error: [26] len=0, status=-18
.......

-microphone

in pulse audio settings is good : "rear microphone"
but
microphone is not activated by default
i must select "front mic" then select "rear mic" according to activate the rear mic

- bluetooth works partially

i can't copy to smartphone

- virtualbox still slow

in general i don't see any greater speed or reactivity with gui or using an app (firefox, mcc, kontact, kmail, virtualbox, dolphin, vlc)

I've tried kernel nrj laptop (the must interesting for me ;) ) on my notebook.
All works good except hibernate on disk! Is it only my problem? :?:

That feature (if you mean TOI) has not been still tested...

Please, can you report mainly about:
- the overall system responsiveness (BFS),
- the average behaviour with multimedia apps
- the DIsk I/O performances (BFQ),
- the USB and SD-Card data transfers (BFQ),
- the laptop temperatures and battery lasting.

2010.2 x64 kernel 3.5.3 nrjng-multimedia
webcam appears to be working properly
wifi works fine recharging b43 driver (broadcom 4306 wifi chip)
the responsiveness of the system is satisfactory but I did'nt yet perform accurate stress test
At a first look a strong positive job. well done guys!

with kernel 3.5.3nrjng pae workstation i586

i have a strange pb :

- usb key partially works

kde device notification works but when clicking on the option "open file manager" or any else nothing happens"
when using dolphin i can access to the usb key

- usb multicard reader partially works

same as usb key

and

more strange
when i switch to kernel 3.1.6 then i have the same issue

is it possible that installing a new kernel changes policy, udisk, udev rule or something like this ?

following an enquiry this pb comes from updating xserver to 1.12.3

I'm trying Kernel 3.5.3 nrjx studio and realtime.
I've the same problem.
Usb key or external disk partially works.
Opening Dolphin , system freeze and it's not possibile do nothing else than ctrl+alt+f1 ...

For audio applications kernel realtime works better than studio but for better explain i will open a specific thread.

Our test report the same results!

The kernel flavour called realtime is performing better than studio

realtime has the desktop value HZ=1.000
multimedia has a middle value HZ=5.000
studio has the max values for HZ=10.000

so studio should be better with more accuracy timings, but

realtime uses Hires Timers with TickLess is disabled (NO_HZ=n)
multimedia uses Hires TImers but Tickless is enabled (NO_HZ=y)
studio uses Hires TImers but Tickless is enabled (NO_HZ=y)

the most of kernel gurus are suggesting to enable Tickless as default, ever and everywhere...
and so our base defconfigs are all "Tickless enabled"

so the explaination could be that for a professional studio kernel we need a NO TIckLess Kernel
even if this could waste some energy more than necessary and produce a greater average load
the next attempt is 3.5.4, in this I want to try to change multimedia and studio to NO Tickless

I've never compiled a kernel and so i have no experience about it.
But often ì've read about ...

the best kernel for audio applications that i used came from CCRMA Planet (for Fedora). Latency is very good but Fedora have real serious problem with video driver/xorg version. No proprietary driver can be used and often with new hardware free drivers doesn't work.
For that kind of kernel , the desktop value HZ = 1.000 makes the difference.

Realtime kernel nrjX 3.5.3 is very good in audio applications (Ardour , Qysnth ... )

I'm sure that you will find the right way to make it works !

Thank you

We can make some experiments around

I created this new kernel branch to make experiments understanding how some small different values
can change so much the kernel behaviour

I have read so many things about these arguments, but sometimes suggestions are just the opposite:
so I thought it's better to go on my way, trying several experiments and testing everything

so we'll continue to make the needed changes until we can reach a true satisfactory point

theorically the new 3.5.4 flavours should performs better than the 3.5.3, and better than -realtime I think
if not, it should means that some HZ values greater than 1000 are not good for this kind of applications

The experiments we'll do in the next 3.5.4 NG should be:

1> first point: now we need to understand the real influence of TickLess and different Timers frequences
new 3.5.4 multimedia and studio will be NO TickLess, so you should do comparisons with previous 3.5.3

2> I could create a new realtime10k flavour, with the only difference of HZ=10000 instead than 1000
in this way we can understand, leaving other values fixed, if raising the frequence is better or worse

I hope with 3.5.4 to undestand some more, if not we must indagate in some other kernel Key Values...

Ok , when kernel 3.5.4 will be available , i will try it amd made all the experiments that could be necessary.

I used Ardour with many tracks and many plugins for Live application ( i play guitar and sing , play sequences and use Ardour like a .... mixer !!! ).

I will put it to the test ! Thank you for you great job !

Salve,
avrei una domanda riguardo questa nuova generazione di kernel nrjX, ma la patch TuxOnice è già operativa o c'è bisogno di fare qualcosa?
Grazie :D
