Kernel 3.8.8 for ROSA MARATHON 2012, ROSA Desktop.Fresh 2012 (2012.1) and Mandriva 2010, MDV2011.0, OpenMandriva Cooker

INFO about the SRPM build possibilities:
For ROSA Marathon we'll build Kernels LTS: 3.0, 3.2, 3.4, and all the latest kernels up to the 3.8 series
For ROSA Fresh we are building all Kernel versions starting only from the 3.6 to the most recent series
For old distro, we are maintaining build compatibility: you can also rebuild for Mandriva 2010 and 2011
Available kernel flavours are: desktop
but there should follows all other main flavours, like realtime, laptop, netbook, server

We have tested: VMWare 9.0.2, VMPlayer 5.0.2, VirtualBox 4.2.8: are OK with 3.8

I have added 'experimental' ZSwap, please, test this new feature!

Kernel 3.8.8 by MIB
This is prepared like the official one used for ROSA Desktop.Fresh 2012
this version is the prepared by MIB for Mandriva and ROSA development

Since October you could find some differences and news also in this mainline serie,
the reason it that we are in full development mode for ROSA 2012.1:
from version 3.5.6 we will release two new flavours and also their 32bit pae versions
  • kernel-nrj-laptop > It's optimized for laptop PCs, with a particular attention for cpu cooling and the battery lasting
  • kernel-nrj-realtime > It's optimized to have the lowest latency and so it's better for realtime apps like jackd, ecc...

ImageIMPORTANT, READ!
  • New path of the Kernel folders for Mandriva and ROSA
General INFO about the new kernel paths and also about the new proprietary kernel drivers
  • Before downloading and installing any kernel 3.8.8 flavour, you need to install the Required microcode firmware!
Microcode firmwares for cpu AMD / INTEL updates
With the proper cpu microcode enabled you can obtain a more reliability of you system, especially indespensable in server area, so when your cpu has a defect, kernel will found the best work-around to avoid slowdowns, or dangerous oops that could harm till to freeze your OS...
  • Notice for the users of MDV 2011!
ABF build for 2011 is broken nowdays, when and if the 2011 build side will be fixed you'll find again the rpms.
Some problems could still occour in Mandriva 2011 by dracut remaining problems with installation and update
these problems if / when happen are not our fault, because aren't related to the kernel contents or packaging...
Once I succeeded to solve this ugly problem, installing the "dracut" version from RM2012 repositories into 2011

You can also get the wished SRPM and make a local rebuild for your own old Mandriva 2010 or 2011

I have Mandriva 2012 lts 64bit. I upgraded kernel desktop 3.8.6 nrjQL to 3.8.8 nrjQL and now when my machine boots I don't see text messages when I press Esc during boot. There is only message: "Could not log bootup: Address in use". So I can not see how services are starting. What is wrong?

I can suggest you to wait and install new kernel 3.8.10 that is very, very, very, close...
if kernel 3.8.10 solve for you, then you can remove kernel 3.8.8 files

[POST EDIT]
I verified the issue, also in my Marathon, with kernel 3.8.8 I have not any systemd msgs... I think I've found the regression cause:
now I'm trying some internal build of kernel 3.8.10 where I hope to remove this problem

About missing the most of systemd msgs from the boot if press ESC:
I feared the problem could be common, for marathon, fresh and cooker

this issue is confirmed (in my PC) but only in 2012.0, where 2012.1 all works just fine...,
and I presume the same good is for cooker

While for Fresh 2012.1 nothing changes... and everything works fine as usual

if that regression happened in 3.8 kernel, and after 3.8.6, this should be something:
since 3.8.7 or 3.8.8, that now we inheredited also for 3.8.10

after a lot of experiments and installs> The problem seems to be present in Marathon only,
the cause could be one of updates or something that is broken in our 2012.0 installations

I tried to install all 3.8 kernel, starting from 3.8.2, and I discovered that all kernels installed
now, are without the systemd msgs, so it should be not related to kernel, but in something
NEW there is in our Marathon, causing this behaviour, at least, with new installed kernel 3.8

loading old installed kernels, all starts as usual, and we can see all sstemd services starting

I checked the menu.lst, and the commands in the kernel lines are the same used also for old
installed kernel versions, so it's not there the problems

now, i'm too tired, tomorrow morning I'll try to install old kernel 3.0.69 to verify my hypotesis

I forgot that after install of kernel 3.8.6 in the past I updated my 2012 lts to Marathon X1. For some unknown reason to me update sources were disabled for media main and some others (this state I had for a long time). So I enabled them and installed a lot of updates, from that moment I saw while booting in grub menu Marathon X1 instead of Marathon 2012 (but I didn't verify if I see logs if ESC pressed ). And yesterday I wanted to install latest kernel 3.8.8 (after install of new kernel I always press ESC to see if all services starts fine). So for me it looked like problem appeared since kernel 3.8.8 but in fact most probably update to Marathon X1 (from 2012lts) caused this issue as you confirmed too.

When I tried to install kernel 3.8.8 I faced also another problem. Installation failed due to missing mkinitrd. In my machine was:
sbin/mkinitrd -> /etc/alternatives/mkinitrd
/etc/alternatives/mkinitrd -> /usr/bin/mkinitrd-dracut

but /usr/bin/mkinitrd-dracut doesn't exist. I found that correct path is /usr/sbin/mkinitrd-dracut, so I modified the symlink /etc/alternatives/mkinitrd to /usr/sbin/mkinitrd-dracut. This was also most probably consequence of update to Marathon X1.

I can confirm the same problem with the missing symlink, that was getting me crazy..., I freared was only on my HD, so it's a general regression

Later, today, I'll try to install an old kernel in the LTS series, 3.0.69, or I'll prepare 3.0.75 to install it:
if the systemd msgs from services are still gone, we have the confirm that something in X1 is wrong

I'll inform immediately ROSA, because this regression might be important amd must be fixed ASAP

bye, NicCo

Sorry, the issue is NOT kernel related, I can't do nothing with it:
whatever kernel version you may install in X1 the results would be the same > no boot msgs

I informed ROSA and this problem will be fixed soon!
