This one works just fine!!

Looks like 1000 Hz resolve problem as stated in post I found yesterday.
now we know that with 1000 Hz , like in desktop it works fine with Tickless Mode =0 and =1,
this feature does not harm the shutdown when HZ=1000

at lower frequences like 250Hz (netbook) and 300Hz (laptop) things maybe rather different:
perhaps with Tickless = 1 > shtutdown is KO and with TIckless = 0 > shutdown could be OK
Look what have I found in top post (from 7th May 2013) on http://ck-hack.blogspot.it/
EDIT: There were some fairly dramatic CPU offline code changes to mainline (YET AGAIN!) and the changes to BFS to make it work were fairly significant so there may once again be issues with power off/reboot/suspend/hibernate. It gets tiresome watching the same code being rehashed in many different ways... "because this time we'll do it right".
I think it probably would be best to advice users to avoid 3.9.x-nrjQL-laptop and 3.9.x-nrjQL-netbook kernels if they have problems on shutdown or reboot and to use 3.9.6-nrjQL-desktop or 3.8.13-nrjQL-laptop while waiting for 3.10.x.

I will test all 4 kernels later in any case.

shutdown problems can be related to bios and sometimes to the microcode...

if you enable the /experts repo, you can find the latest version of microcode
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/rosa2012.1/64/experts/

the single rpm is
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/rosa201 ... noarch.rpm

Hi Nicco,
I tried to install the new version of laptop, but the problem persists. Even updating the microcode my laptop still hungs during shutdown/reboot with the same message.

Can you try the kernell-nrjQL-server-3.9.6-1?

this is HZ=100
if your suppositions are right, nothing under HZ=1000 should shutdown, server at 100 neither

if it's so, next 3.9.7, I'll change the profile for all flavour latop/netbook at this min value of 1000,
and to obtain a :mrgreen: behaviour, I'll use Tickless Mode ON, and all other keys we already use

On interesting suggestions by Per Øyvind Karlsen,
lately, starting from kernel 3.9.1, we added these 3 key on the power zone: these should be fine,
but, who knows, if with freq less than 1000 may harm the shutdown in certain hw, perhaps...
* CONFIG_PM_AUTOSLEEP=y > http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/PM_AUTOSLEEP.html
* CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT=10
* CONFIG_SND_AC97_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT=10

I can prepare new laptop/netbook (-69.3 & ever 250/300Hz) but without these recent values,
using the past configs is the only remaining doubt we can try and verify now,
then if these are not effective on the shutdown, tomorrow for laptop/netbook I'll use 1000Hz...

Kernel 3.9.7 is really close: I hope to have ideas clearer before preparing it:
we can see, from the link below, there are a couple of fixes in the ACPI area
http://www.spinics.net/lists/stable/msg12244.html
Responses should be made by Thu Jun 20 16:15:42 UTC 2013.
Anything received after that time might be too late.
Kernel nrjQL 3.9.6 testing release nr 3
In the meanwhile I'm preparing for Andreas an Viking a 3th release of 3.9.6:

you can follow the rebuild and availability:
https://abf.rosalinux.ru/nicco/Kernel-3 ... uild_lists

you can read the changelog, right below:

Code: Select all

%changelog

* Wed Jun 19 2013 Nicolo' Costanza <[email protected]> 3.9.6-69.3:
this time the rebuild will provide only 2 flavours to test: laptop & netbook
+ update to 3.9.6 stable
- test version to duplicate and discover the reason for which it can not
- shutdown PC (with freezing) in so many laptop pcs: laptop & netbook
- The problem is not related to Tickless Mode so must be elsewhere:
- now I'm reverting some key related to power features to test if...
  * # CONFIG_PM_AUTOSLEEP is not set
  * CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT=0
  * CONFIG_SND_AC97_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT=0
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Kernel 3.9 for mdv 2010.2, 2011.0, cooker, rosa.lts2012.0, rosa2012.1
- MIB (Mandriva International Backports) - http://mib.pianetalinux.org/
- The rel -1 (mainline serie), with official kernel sources and addons,
- instead (-69) will be used for development and experimental flavours,
- Yin & Yang (69) release - a very complete but experimental flavours...
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------

* Tue Jun 18 2013 Nicolo' Costanza <[email protected]> 3.9.6-69.2
+ update to 3.9.6 stable
- update BFQ to v6r2
- test version to duplicate and discover the reason for which it can not
- shutdown PC (with freezing) in so many laptop pcs: laptop/netbook
- I want to verity my suspects on Tickless mode, and so I'm changing:
- nrjQL-laptop and nrjQL-netbook from Tickeless=Y to N (NO_HZ=N)
- nrjQL-desktop from Tickless=N to Y (now is NO_HZ=Y)
- If Im right laptop and netbook will shutdown fine, nrjQL-desktop not
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Kernel 3.9 for mdv 2010.2, 2011.0, cooker, rosa.lts2012.0, rosa2012.1
- MIB (Mandriva International Backports) - http://mib.pianetalinux.org/
- The rel -1 (mainline serie), with official kernel sources and addons,
- instead (-69) will be used for development and experimental flavours,
- Yin & Yang (69) release - a very complete but experimental flavours...
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
We could also verify, preparing a new nrjQL-desktop, replacing only a key:
HZ=1000 with HZ=300
if then the desktop has the shutdown issue, we can be sure we isolated
the real culprit, with none more doubts...

In the evening, i may also prepare a standard, with old configs, 3.9.7-rc1:
so you could verify if the problem has been naturally solved mainstream

Bye, NicCo

Kernel nrjQL 3.9.6 testing release nr 4
In the meanwhile I'm preparing for Andreas an Viking a 4th release of 3.9.6.

https://abf.rosalinux.ru/nicco/Kernel-3 ... uild_lists

this test release may give us a sure answer:
if this nrjQL-desktop (300Hz) does not perform the proper shutdown, the culprit is Mr. HZ!

Code: Select all

%changelog

* Wed Jun 19 2013 Nicolo' Costanza <[email protected]> 3.9.6-69.4

- shutdown PC (with freezing) in so many laptop pcs: laptop & netbook
- The problem is not related to Tickless Mode so must be elsewhere:

Hello NicCo. I am home.

Should I test both 3rd and 4th release or just 4th?

btw. "updated" micro codes are same as the ones I had

Code: Select all

[viking@delta ~]$ dmesg | grep microcode
[   17.813516] microcode: CPU0 sig=0x20655, pf=0x10, revision=0x2
[   17.816188] microcode: CPU1 sig=0x20655, pf=0x10, revision=0x2
[   17.818010] microcode: CPU2 sig=0x20655, pf=0x10, revision=0x2
[   17.820134] microcode: CPU3 sig=0x20655, pf=0x10, revision=0x2
[   17.820758] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.00 <[email protected]>, Peter Oruba
[   23.210943] microcode: CPU0 updated to revision 0x3, date = 2011-09-01
[   23.211576] microcode: CPU1 updated to revision 0x3, date = 2011-09-01
[   23.212236] microcode: CPU2 updated to revision 0x3, date = 2011-09-01
[   23.212913] microcode: CPU3 updated to revision 0x3, date = 2011-09-01
[ 23.214963] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.00 removed.
EDIT: Now I see that 3rd are laptop and netbook, and 4th is desktop. I'll test all of them.

I tested all v2, v3 and v4 kernels, and those are the results:

3.9.6-nrjQL-server-69.2rosa x86_64
HANGS ON REBOOT!

3.9.6-nrjQL-netbook-69.2rosa x86_64
HANGS ON REBOOT!

3.9.6-nrjQL-laptop-69.2rosa x86_64
HANGS ON REBOOT!

3.9.6-nrjQL-desktop-69.2rosa x86_64
REBOOTS FINE!

3.9.6-nrjQL-netbook-69.3rosa x86_64
HANGS ON REBOOT!

3.9.6-nrjQL-laptop-69.3rosa x86_64
HANGS ON REBOOT!
BOOT VERY LONG FIRST TIME!

3.9.6-nrjQL-desktop-69.4rosa x86_64
HANGS ON REBOOT!

EDIT: Almost everything was expected, but I am little confused with results of 3.9.6-nrjQL-server-69.2rosa x86_64. I expected working reboot with that one.

Server results are OK as server is 100Hz, so should not shtudown in the same way of laptop/netbook...

we know that Kernel 3.9 with BFQ430 has shutdown issue when timers are lower than 1000Hz!

Conclusion:
for next kernel 3.9.7, tomorrow I think, I'll use 1000Hz for all flavours, differenciating all the other features that are possibile

Please do not forget that 3.9.x kernels on 32bit Rosa 2012.1 also hangs on this machine.

If you find some time, you could also make test laptop build with 300Hz for rosa 2012.1 x64, to see if anything changed. I think I will have time to test it if you want.
