we found a solution to be applied directly to the vmware sources

I tested it on Rosa 2012.0 Marathon x64, it works fine, but ROSA Plymouth (bootsplash) I don't see anymore while booting. Instead there is a black screen and some progress bar at the bottom increasing from left to right corner, is that correct?

I didn't notice this with OmLx.
But I noticed that each time I install a new kernel, this string

Code: Select all

resume=/dev/sda5 init=/lib/systemd/systemd
is added to the kernel command line of all entries in /etc/boot/grub2/grub.cfg
After several installations, the lines become rather long.
Of, course, this doesn't prevent the boot ;)

The issue that you noticed happens only with ROSA Marathon!

In my PC, Marathon x86_64 had the same behaviour since the update to X1, this happened me also with all previous kernel I've tested on it, different than the official 3.0.xx:
it seems like after installing a new kernel there is no more verbosity during boot, if I press Esc to read the textual Iogs I can read only 5 text rows (only those related to mounting the available devices)...

I believe this may happen even if I install a new kernel 3.0.x, for example the EOL 3.0.101, but I've made none tests to verify that

When I discovered the issue, soon after my update to X1, I've informed ROSA about the new silent behaviour, but it seems that nothing has been made to solve that problem, or perhaps this behaviour is the new right one for Marathon (however, it boots faster)...

For a long time with newer kernels I had problem that when I pressed ESC during boot I didn't see the verbose logging like before. Only some few text rows.

But now I have different problem. Till yesterday I used kernel 3.11.10 and when I was booting my PC without ESC I saw plymouth bootsplash as always, so standard behavior. Yesterday I installed first time kernel 3.12.8 and after reboot I didn't see plymouth bootsplash, only black screen (without pressing ESC) with progress bar at the bottom, which has three different colors in it moving from left to right. In the right corner there is text ROSA 2012.0. After some time of booting progress bar continues on next row, so then I see two rows of progress, something like overflow. Looks strange and maybe also buggy.

I tried to boot kernel 3.11.10 and then I see plymouth bootsplash as usual. If I boot kernel 3.12.8 I see only progress bar in text mode. So it is kernel dependent. I found on web that bootsplash is inside initram image. So maybe if some package was updated before I installed 3.12.8 and changed boot splash file somewhere on disk, then when I installed 3.12.8, new initram image was created with that new bootsplash file on disk. Is it possible?
