Kernel 3.15.6 for ROSA 2012 2012.1 2014.1 OMV2013 2014 2015

Kernel 3.15.6 for ROSA 2012lts, rosa2012.1, omv2013.0, omv2014.0, rosa2014.1 and cooker (omv2015.0)
Kernel 3.15 finally arrives in its complex nrj & nrjQL flavours, for ROSA and OpenMandriva Linux OSes!

This is the very first version of "nrj/nrjQL" stable 3.15.x, in its early development stage,
so, it's released only for Beta testing purposes,
please, don't use this srpm if you are a newbie, because maybe is still to fix all over!!!

Kernel 3.15.6 - http://lwn.net/Articles/605935/
Since version 3.15.6 we use the new major version of BFQ v7r5

read more about BFQv7r5:
viewtopic.php?p=23575#p23575
Hi,
here is a first good side effect of our effort for getting bfq merged into mainline :)
Two developers reported a regression with two git tasks, which gave us the opportunity to further improve throughput boosting with the workloads generated by these tasks. The result is this v7r5.

As of now, Arianna has prepared patches only for 3.13.0-3.15.0, but we have decided to share with you these patches even before also the other ones are ready.
  • IMPROVEMENT: Improve throughput boosting by idling the device
only for processes that, in addition to perform sequential I/O,
are I/O-bound (apart from weight-raised queues, for which idling
is always performed to guarantee them a low latency).
  • IMPROVEMENT: Improve throughput boosting by depriving processes
    that cooperate often of weight-raising.
  • CODE IMPROVEMENT: Pass of improvement of the readability of both
    comments and actual code.

VMWare virtualization
We have noticed that Kernel 3.15 did not work with the VMWare virtualization
we are searching for a solution to be applied directly to the vmware sources...

Doesn't boot, Nicco. :( At the very beginning, the message shows kernel and initrd loading, then black screen with blinking cursor at upper left. NumLck light is on but keyboard is unresponsive, I have to reset. Thanks.

Kernels are developed on ROSA Marathon, the local build is tested on the same PC and OS,
if everything is OK on ROSA Marathon I send the SRPMS on ABF to a multiplatform rebuild

this time I tested kernel-nrjQL-desktop on ROSA Marathon and was OK,
alerted by your msg I have installed kernel-nrjQL-desktop on omv2014,
and I noticed the same behaviour... it stops on boot, it's no good at all...

soon after I have installed kernel-nrj-desktop to test, and it rebooted:
it boots fine, it works as a charm, and currently I am using this nrj one.

Code: Select all

$ uname -a ; cat /etc/product.id
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.15.6-nrj-desktop-1omv #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Jul 20 19:25:40 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
vendor=OpenMandriva Association,distribution=OpenMandriva Lx,type=Basic,version=2014.0,branch=Official,release=1,arch=x86_64,product=OpenMandriva
ISSUE to fix:
one of the extended feature available in nrjQL serie must be wrong

Please, can you install the nrj kernel:
kernel-nrj-desktop-devel and kernel-nrj-desktop

let me know if also for you the nrj is working

This boots and, so far, is working normally. nvidia builds for these later kernels but still not fglrx. I plan to try another Radeon card soon, so that continues to be an issue for me. Thanks.

Thanks for testing and feedback
today I'll try to fix nrjQL flavours
(we need to fix it asap, the reason is that it should be the official kernel into new omv2014.1)

about nvidia is good knowing that it works:
what driver version have you tested?

about fglrx I'll ask to maintainer to update
or to add a build patch for kernel 3.15

I've done the following and will reboot. fglrx, from the latest stable at ATI, fglrx-14.10.1006.1001, does not build. You know, there is at least one kernel in main/updates that will not build fglrx and I've reported that some time ago: https://issues.openmandriva.org/show_bug.cgi?id=859 Unless I'm the only one, it seems more energy ought to be invested in that bug.

Anyway, I'll reboot to 3 on this kernel, as I don't want to mess up my xorg.conf, now, and see where that goes.

You should restart your computer for kernel-nrjQL-desktop-3.15.6-100omv
[root@localhost recordings]# init 6]
p.s. why doesn't the spoiler tag work for me?

Ok, that booted to 3 just fine, I logged as root and CLI was working.

[spoiler1=BTW, some time ago, I started noticing a mouse cursor in tty that responds to the mouse. In this last boot to -100omv, I could select by dragging and paste with the middle button, as in gui. I didn't notice were that came from.
Thanks.][/spoiler1]

You know, there is at least one kernel in main/updates that will not build fglrx and I've reported that some time ago: https://issues.openmandriva.org/show_bug.cgi?id=859 Unless I'm the only one, it seems more energy ought to be invested in that bug.
I have recalled your #859 bug to the cooker IRC: current fglrx is KO with all kernel > 3.13

it's Great to know that new nrjQL-desktop-3.15.6 boots also for you... (the boot issue is fixed)

All programs like virtualbox, vmware, nvidia, ati (fglrx), wl-broadcom need to rebuild modules into kernel
everytime we publish a new kernel, it's a high risk that these installed programs may not work anymore

for VMware product (VMware workstation and VMware player), we have just solved, here is the solution
viewtopic.php?p=23936#p23936

about VirtualBox, I can guess that we need a new version or some patches to add to the current vbox
OpenMandriva 2014.1 will be released with kernel 3.15, so in few days someone surely will fix VirtualBox
(OpenMandriva 2014.1 is sceduled for 8 August, even if you use ROSA it's possible to backport VBox)
