ROSA R9 show you 3 "???" on boot, then crash? Solved!

Post by NicCo »

Trying to install ROSA R9, all versions, I came across some PCs, which immediately after the grub screen, showed a dark background with 3 small question marks "???", in reversed text, and shortly after loading it went Crash, and it was no longer possible to continue, making the R9 in fact unusable!
And for all versions, I mean exactly: EE (official with KDE4), Plasma 5, Gnome, LxQt

I asked for help at the time, and I was told that the error hit a fair amount of PCs, especially those with old video cards, and they were already investigating a solution, even though the solution seemed far away ...

The specimen on which I encountered this disabling problem was an Acer Aspire 5720Z

A few days ago, exactly August 9, Andrey Bondrov on my request prepared a new ISO that should finally contain the much-coveted fix on the disabling problem, downloaded it, copied to a USB stick, tested on the Aspire 5720Z laptop, And finally in place of the 3 question marks, I saw 3 small rectangles, and then loading continued, and I could access KDE.

All this in Live Mode, then I later tried to run the full physical installation on HardDisk and finally I had the R9 perfectly working, where it was not absolutely possible.

I would like to inform you that all daily iso, with a date higher than August 9, have the fix, so if you have encountered the problem and therefore could not see R9 in Live Mode or even install it, now it's enough to get a new ISO, that with your favorite DE, and try again, should finally work for you too!

Choose the type of ISO that interests you, the official is the EE (with KDE4), but there is already a fixed plasma, look for if there is an ISO whose date is at least August 9, of course it is usually to choose the one with the date Most recent, and finally you will also have ISO working on hardware where it just was not possible.

N.B. At the time I write, ISO (only 64bit) with the fix of:
EE (KDE4), and Plasma, while Gnome and LXQt are not yet available

I suggest the current links:

ISO x86_64 with Plasma (no! UEFI version)
https://abf.rosalinux.ru/platforms/rosa ... ists/19480

ISO x86_64 with Plasma (UEFI version)
https://abf.rosalinux.ru/platforms/rosa ... ists/19519

ISO x86_64 EE with KDE4 (UEFI version)
https://abf.rosalinux.ru/platforms/rosa ... ists/19518

ISO x86_64 EE with KDE4 (no! UEFI version)
https://abf.rosalinux.ru/platforms/rosa ... ists/19528

Unfortunately at the present time, only the ISO 64bit are up to date and contain the fix,
I will ask at ROSALAB, if they can also prepare fixed 32bit ISO, as soon as possible!

However, I'm sure that in the second half of September (and here is a nice anticipation of 8-), the new R10's ISO will surely have that fix, but this is only for those who still want and / or wait to install The new series rosa2016.1.

The problem, present on the official ISO and the distro until Aug. 8, was the following
http://bugs.rosalinux.ru/show_bug.cgi?id=8093

The explanation of the problem, below in the box:
^^^ 3 question marks issue

"" Device_manager: ignore drm devices when kernel modes are disabled.

Some video drivers, such as the older nvidia proprietary drivers, create
Drm devices that do not support kernel modesetting. The drm renderer will not
Work with such devices. In this case we need to ignore the drm devices
And use the frame buffer devices instead.

This patch uses the presence of 'nokmsboot' or 'nomodeset' on the kernel
Command line as an indication that such a driver is being used. ""
