ROSA 2012.1 - request list from the Community

Posted: 26 October 2012, 18:50
by NicCo
We collected all complaints I have found about ROSA Desktop 2012 Beta, from the Community users side,
these are coming mostly from different forum user msgs, some from received MP requests
I'll write everything in this list
The order is as they came in time order, not for any importance order

I don't want to forget saying that many users found that ROSA 2012.1 is overall wonderful!!!

  1. KDE takes too much time when nepomuk is enabled
or perhaps is the ROSAsync startup... who knows...,
    • Answer: from Pastor Di
Approved/Confirmed > Yes, on slower computers nupomuk uses 100% of CPU.
  2. In the boot we missed the Rescue mode menu from grub
    • Answer: from Per Øyvind
Approved: it will be added SuperGrub2 or the light solution offered us by Per Øyvind
"I've lately done some heavy work on a minimal environment which embeds a far more size optimized version the rescue mode related to working on the installer. It's almost ready for being made available as a regular package with an initramfs that can be made available as a separate boot option with, similar to as ie. memtest86 is already.
I hope this should satisfy people. :)"
  3. We missed also vbox-additions as default in iso
    • Answer: from Dmitry Ashkadov
Confirmed > +100500. Every time I install ROSA in VirtualBox I have to install additions manually.
  4. How to configure SimpleWelcome with the apps for categories, like before with RM2012
  5. How is possible to add new icons to ROSA Panel?
    • Answer: from Pastor Di
Solution > Click on the icon with the mouse and hold 4-5 seconds. The icon will move to 2-3 mm.
And drag-drop down, at this point SW disappears and appears desktop to the panel.
  6. SimpleWelcome, many times don't follow the video dimensione when you resize in vbox
    • Answer: from Dmitry Ashkadov
Solution > Yes, it's a known issue. We'll fix it later.
  7. The Facebook tool from the menu, seems does not scroll the main facebook page
  8. VERY SERIOUS
    Audio OSS support
is missed, and even worse the CUSE support is somewhat broken
It's not more possible to use /dev/dsp, dev/audio, ecc., towards an application needing direct audio access
    http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/OSSProxy
    • Answer: from Alexander Barakin
did you try to run the necessary programs through padsp?
      $ apropos padsp
      padsp [] (1) - PulseAudio OSS Wrapper
NicCo > That's not usefull and / or doesn't solve the problem, how can we address the audio device to a program?
  9. Add an easy tool to manage USB devices avoiding users format by mistake their HD
    Quick USB formatter > viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2662&p=14987#p14987
    • Answer: from Denis Koryavov
Approved : Quick USB formatter will be moved from contrib to main and added to the ISOs
  10. ROSA Media Player menu:
In vbox, when you play a video, the pull down menu are not visible, the same happens with smplayer, but you can succeed to change the video in x11 and then it works
  11. Installer: is not all localized (especially msgs in installing phase)
  12. SimpleWelcome: we can exit only selecting or with Esc.
In other words, if you enter in SimpleWelcome and want to select nothing you should click mouse or press Esc, this is very uncomfortable
    • Answer:
(before) Click on SimpleWelcome icon on the bottom left
now -> Click on SimpleWelcome icon in RocketBar
  13. plasma-applet-note is missing.
It would be great if present as necessary
  14. Razor-qt for old machines.
It's very light and works very well > http://razor-qt.org/
    • Answer: from d_uragan
"razor-qt has been built to contrib, as far as I can see."
Azioga > razorqt is present in contrib, but a meta package(task-razortqt) could make comfortable during installation
NicCo > Denis Silakov rebuilt razorqt, now to install I used (No task-razorqt) > urpmi razorqt-desktop razorqt-session razorqt-power
  15. SimpleWelcome: recent documents are showed double
If you see the same file 10 times, you can see it in list 10 links. I believe this is not correct
  16. SimpleWelcome: recent document, in the first page are not GOOD for privacy reasons
Mainly because thay have nice previews ;-)
Hypotesis, you have watched some xxx photos, and you find the icons in the menu: What a shit figure... ;-)
but apart all that, is not a GOOD thing letting others know what you have recently watched, on a professional workplace I mean, and then:
Recent Documents must be cleaned, or at least users must have an option to clean it
    • Approved/Fixed: see the little broom near "Recent Documents"
  17. Many users are asking:
Upgrade from Marathon 2012 can be done safely?
    • Answer: from d_uragan
"Likely yes. At least we are trying to support such an update.
Probably we'll create an update instruction if some non-obvious steps are found."
  18. A fews remaining Ugly Icons
I've tested the most widespread gtk programs, and in the most of them icons are fixed, only
    - gkrellm
    - Eterm
    - Xsane
are still showing ugly icons in the SimpleWelcome menu"
  19. VERY SERIOUS
Network profiles are still missing from MCC and there is not a valid replacement
a "Premiere League" Distro CAN'T miss that feature! - It's very very important...
  20. Kickoff has not an icon in "Add objets"
  21. SimpleWelcome: if the same program is present in more than one menu categories, it's listed more times in the applications menu.
Nobody wants to have the same command in different menu categories.
You could have Kppp in Internet and in Tools in SimpleWelcome, because the categories are no more present, you would find this application listed twice
  22. GoogleEarth has orrible fonts, that hit very much with the overall aspect
The antialias in the GE fonts is an unresolved problems, but in other distros looks better
  23. A way to switch off ROSAsync start without removing its rpms
For the people using Dropbox, this feature is useless and they want to disable
    • Answer: from d_uragan
"removing psyncclient rpm is the most easy way to disable ROSAsync"
  24. Kickoff is still missing from Beta1 ISO?
    • Answer: from Pulfer (Andrey Bondrov)
Approved/Confirmed > It will be available in next RC ISOs
"Yes :-/ Because when I asked to add kickoff I was told that the ISOs are already prepared (it was 1 week ago).
So no additional packages were included."
  25. If ROSA is going to release the beautiful 2012.1 with an already dead kernel (3.5),
it's no more supported by official support team, they will make a very bad impression
    • Answer: from Kazancev
"I have pushed new Kernel 3.6 in 2012.1 since version 3.6.4, now waiting for 3.6.5"
  26. The Key to switch off the PC in the ROSA theme, without a further confirm is an offense:
if you have a server while you are elaborating something of important, and you push button
by a wrong click, you can loose all your data...
  27. In case kde does not start due to corrupted $HOME/.kde4 > viewtopic.php?p=19996#p19996
I find useful the presence of a default wm very light (icewm/xfce?) alternative to kde
  28. some users are complaining problems burning optical supports with K3b:
it seems that writing ISOs with K3B often does not close correctly the writing
This problem has been noticed while some users trying burning Beta ISOs from a PC with ROSA 2012.1 Alfa (updated with all daily updates)
  29. Multiple requests: from Tobal > viewtopic.php?p=20056#p20056
    - Packages: Sagemath (from mdv), Scilab, R-CRAN (in only one package from Tobal personal repo)
    - Klook, should have a volume control when playing a video
    - Icons: more ROSA icons for the science programs
    - Drakxtools: I can't configure the grub, fix it or replace with different software, example > http://ksmanis.wordpress.com/2011/04/29 ... or-v0-4-5/
    • Answer: from Denis Silakov about Drakxtools (configure the grub)
Drakboot doesn't work with grub2. We should drop it in the final release.
1>Use ksm-grub2 instead. (Grub2 configuration tool in KDE Control Center).
2>We have grub-customizer (used in Ubuntu), though it is not built for any
official platform yet. You can find it in Vladimir Testov's repository:
      https://abf.rosalinux.ru/icedphoenix/grub-customizer

      A. Kazancev promoted grub-customizer in /main > now "urpmi grub-customizer", and you have it
  30. Xorg server 13: Xorg 7.7, X server 1.13, Mesa 9 > viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3546
now that we have Kernel 3.6 in 2012.1 it would be great also having the complete Xorg/Mesa stuff
    • Answer: from Kazancev (31/10/2012)
Today started the Xorg Server 13 replacement
Not all updated, but I'm trying first the update of the most needing part. All be done tomorrow."
  31. VMWare "Guest" compatibility: from GvM > viewtopic.php?p=20115#p20115
It would be nice to have the possibility to install Rosa 2012.1 as as guest OS in a VmWare Workstation 9.0 or VMPlayer 5.0 VM.
  32. "Your favorites apps": from Rugyada & Azioga > viewtopic.php?p=20153#p20153
    Rugyada (and Dago68):
We would like to have "Your favourite apps" in SimpleWelcome
(in main window - first tab)
We suggest action like: right click on app icon > Add to favourites. Azioga:
Maybe there is a reason why it is called SimpleWelcome ;-)
I too would like it was not so Simple.
I think that "recents" have not to be in the opening menu, but in a separate tab.
so we would have 4 tabs (Welcome/Applications/Recents/TimeFrame)

Thanks for Your attention.
If I will find around other useful suggestions for ROSA Desktop 2012, I'll add to this topic
.

12) SimpleWelcome : we can exit only selecting or with Esc
In other words, if you enter in SimpleWelcome and want to select nothing
you should click mouse or press Esc, this is very uncomfortable

Click on SimpleWelcome icon on the bottom left.
i had this icon, but now it's disappeared. maybe after latest updates.
anyhow i can click the SW icon on rosa panel, but this is uncomfortable too

Ciao, Luca

Package Sagemath, in Mndv there is a package
Package Scilab.
Package R-CRAN with only one package, there is a srpm in my personal ROSA repo.
A Volume button in KLOOK when we're viewing a video.
More ROSA icons for science programs.
Repair drakxtools, in 2012.lts i can't configure my Grub because there is a bug with drakxtools.

More support to 2012 LTS, actually ROSA has forgotten the LTS meaning. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i had some troubles installing my first printer(hp 8600 aio)

hp-setup find the printer, but can not comunicate with it.

so i tried with mcc->system-config-printer. the configuration tool ask me for connect with cups server. i responded yes, but cups won't start.

i start cups manually and finally, after that task-printing-server and task-printing-hp were intalled by system-config-printer, my printer works.

so:
- hplip is installed, but without task-printing-hp and task-printing-server is impossible to configure printers
- system-config-printer is not able to start cups service

Ciao, Luca.

I can select it from ROSA KDM, then I can choose different options at boot:
right now, I'm writing this msg from a RAZORQT session

It would be nice to have the possibility to install Rosa 2012.1 as guest OS in a VmWare Workastation 9.0 VM.

ATM the Beta does install, but fails right at the next boot after the installation:
dracut complains with the error messages below:

Code: Select all

dracut Warning: Cancelling resume operation. Device not found.
dracut Warning: Cancelling resume operation. Device not found.
dracut Warning: Could not boot.
dracut Warning: Could not boot.
dracut Warning: Cancelling resume operation. Device not found.
dracut Warning: Could not boot.

dracut Warning: "dev/disk/by-uuid/f9665b5d-7b87-4d18-9401-1c9856b02a6e" does not exist
Dropping to debug shell
and then drop the user in a "dracut:/#" command prompt without any clue about how to manage the situation.

Disabling the use of the UUID at the installation time does not change the situation:
the last warnings before the "Dropping to debug shell" line only become

Code: Select all

dracut Warning: "dev/sda1" does not exist
dracut Warning: "dev/sda1" does not exist
and the final result is the same.
