Mandriva 2011: main problems to be fixed before release!

Post by NicCo »

Mandriva 2011: main problems to be fixed before release!

This text will be send to Mandriva executives, hoping it'll be taken in the right consideration!
We received all official answers : read here!

Table of Contents
* 1) Installer
* 2) Memory requirements
* 3) Akonadi
* 4) KDE status
* 5) Hybrid Graphics support
* 6) Gnome Community Edition

1> Installer:
it seems really in a very bad shape...
I full must agree with Dwight Paige, here:
http://lists.mandriva.com/cooker/2011-07/msg00144.php

It's absolutely needed a "Free" and "PWP" DVD version like 2010.2
With new live format we need over one hour for a basic (bad) install...
Table of Contents

2> Memory requirements:
I full must agree with Sylvain Zucca, here:
http://lists.mandriva.com/cooker/2011-07/msg00128.php

and so,
We can use Windows Seven with 1024 Mega
We can use Mac OSX 10.6.x with 1024 Mega
but
We can't use Mandriva 2011 with 1024 Mega
at least we need 1536M (1.5Gb) just to be usable?

With 1024M we need more than 10 minutes to start live mode, then the OS is rather unusable...

I failed to understand why rosa stuff should use 512M or more...
when icon based OSes like Android should work even with 256/512M

In this way Mandriva will succeed to ship the most memory hungry OS

I heard that MDV 2011 is planned to target for 512 Mb RAM PC as minimum requirements,
and so:
or they should rewrite all rosa stuff to be much lighter,
or they should find a way where at the very first boot stage we can
choose between two different UI:
  • KDE default mode (for old PC with less than 1 Gb ram)
  • Mandriva Rosa mode (for recent PC with more than 1G ram)
Table of Contents

3> Akonadi:
Personally I'd also suggest to turn off akonadi support by default,
if it's possible. Looks like akonadi eats up to 200 mb system RAM!
Table of Contents

4> KDE status
kde 4.6.4 has a lot problems and regressions
try to fixing it in newer kde 4.6.5 not in 4.6.4
(If they want to release 2011 with KDE 4.6, it should be the
latest - 4.6.5. With as many regressions fixed as possible!)
Table of Contents

5> Hybrid Graphics:
As I previously discussed here
http://mib.pianetalinux.org/mib/forum/v ... 295#p16295
I hope they are reconsidering that important thing, doing something
and for that reason I hope they switch to kernel 3.0 for next weeks!
Table of Contents

6> Gnome "Community Edition" Iso only unofficial support:
Take care or find those who do, at least for this last time, a DVD edition with Gnome,
although it could be classified as a "Community Edition" and not officially supported:
This is a very important point, because 50% of users still prefer Mandriva with Gnome

Totally agree!. This consumes lots of memory ¬ ¬.
Kubuntu 4.11 which is usually heavier than other distros, VirtualBox runs perfectly, 600/700Mb, whereas mandriva 2011 on the same conditions "drag", spend a few minutes while it sees how the panel is formed =(

We received already all answers from Mandriva executives,
we thank them all for their consideration and rapid answers!
Their answers are to be considered as very satisfactory

from
Denis Koryavov, ROSA Laboratory. - http://www.rosalab.ru

About
2) Memory requirements
NicCo wrote:> or they should rewrite all rosa stuff to be much lighter
Denis Koryavov wrote: I disagree. ROSA's stuff works perfectly on the 512 MB of RAM.
So the guilty for problem 2) must be elsewhere! Perhaps in some service or Akonadi and KDE related

in Mandriva ML he also suggested an interesting reading
http://kate-editor.org/2011/07/10/kde-4 ... arcraft-2/

We apologize to Rosalab for having thought that it could be the cause, the culprit seems something in KDE!

We at MIB (with all our sincerity):
- We like much the new Mandriva Desktop UI (all rosa stuff),
and we'll spread, as we can, our opinions to all community!

from
Arnaud LAPREVOTE - management board president - Mandriva
Laprévote Arnaud wrote:Hello to all,

We are looking at each item carefully. All are concerns for us, memory,
installer status, kde status, ...

Concerning the hybrid graphics support, well this may take a little time
to get, so for the release difficult to promise anything. However, they
will 2011.1, .2, .3 ... with incremental improvement such as that. Maybe
it will be at this time.

I absolutely agree for the gnome edition. It would be nice to have a
community edition.

Regards,

Arnaud
Good News: Here there's no need to add more!

Eugeni Dodonov - Release Engineer for Mandriva Desktop 2011

We don't like too such a crippled Dolphin!

Discussion:
http://mandriva.598463.n5.nabble.com/Co ... 84912.html

there's already a much animated discussion, so we don't need here other discussions about the same argument,

also in italian forum, there is an animated discussion:
Dolphin + RosaLab: a me non piace
http://www.it-mandriva.org/dolphin-rosa ... html#p5098

we can only say, yes, again
We don't like too such a crippled Dolphin!

Xorg Server 1.10.2 > 1.0.3

link:
http://forum.mandriva.com/en/viewtopic. ... 07#p848264

  • Thunderbird 5.0
  • CUPS
