Moondrake GNU/Linux 2012 Alpha 2 (Unnamed Loser)

Post by rugyada »

News from Per Øyvind Karlsen - just arrived:

Image Hi!

Yet again keeping up the tradition of delays, a new prerelease is out:
Moondrake GNU/Linux 2012 Alpha 2 (Unnamed loser)

Some highlights of this release are:
* Iso creation tool has been rewritten in python, made several times faster and merged with DrakX
* Dual arch iso features a complete set of all lxde packages
* New, complete sound theme contributed by Christian Augustin
* Initial work on rewriting installer & libraries in c++ has been started
* Installer stage1 & rescue mode merged (boot.iso will no longer have to download rescue environment)
* Much extended set of packages built for uClibc environment
* Grub 2 has replaced isolinux for the installer (system migration targetted for the first beta)
* KDE 4.9.2

Known issues:
* i586 release has been skipped due to issues with repositories leading to issues generating it
* plymouth uses text mode by default

While originally anticipated to be skipped and a first beta to be released a month ago already, things did not turn out as planned, again related to same reasons as for the previous alpha release.
As the actual switch to ABF will finally take place over the following days, where svn commits will be frozen (Matthew should get back to you with details on this), this second alpha gets released now just to get it out before the disruption caused by this happens and to allow us to start on new round of greater updates in preparation for the first beta.
Due to this things has been rushed a bit and we'll be skipping the i586 isos this time due to issue with the current build system creating difficulties generating it, for which also the dual arch iso has been affected with only x86_64 install currently being possible this time around.

The name of the distribution used for this release isn't actually the final name chosen, but only one of the likelier candidates under consideration, which we're taking out for a test drive to try it on for now and prepare for a rebranding process.

Hopefully we'll be troubled by less issues for the next round in preparation of the first beta. Image

They say:
"the name will be chosen by the community when the openMandriva association is finally formed and the internal organs of the association running"
So we, the Community, will be presumably called to vote :)

Although my first choice would go to Mira Linux, I'll support Daddy PerØyvind's Moondrake proposal ;)

we'll be skipping the i586 isos this time due to issue with the current build system
In questo rilascio è disponibile solo la 64bit.

Hi all: just installed and currently using m2012-alpha2 after my m2011 motherboard died. M2011 has lots of problems recognizing the new mb. I may report on them somewhere else if I figure it's worth the hassle.

Here's what I found on m2012-alpha2 dual 64bit so far:

KDE mostly ok: installed with urpmi task-kde. I get the same DBUS error as others have. Fixed clock through Mcc, as applet did not work. Failed to add desktop switcher to task bar.

Firefox works ok: I even copied my old m2011 .mozilla over.

Same with Thunderbird. Copied .thunderbird over.

glxgears ok: GL_RENDERER = Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Desktop
GL_VERSION = 2.1 Mesa 9.0

Chromium-bsu ok: I use it to test OpenGL. Oddly, I now have to invoke it with full path (/usr/games/chromium-bsu).

Flash (Youtube) works fine: installed flash-player-plugin-11.2.202.243-1-mdv2012.0.x86_64.

MCC ok, but strange: now it runs in text mode instead of gui when launched from Konsole.

Skype ok.

diskdrake BAD: setting up a mount point needs a reboot to work! Before reboot, running $ mount /mnt/mystuff errors with: mount: /dev/sdxx is already mounted or /mnt/mystuff busy.

Ok, I found this discussion: Mandriva Linux 2012 Alpha 2 - testresults - Central Topic http://forum.mandriva.com/en/viewtopic. ... it=alpha+2 on the Mandriva forums, and I think I'll cross post my previous post there.

The purpose of this thread is not clear to me. Should we discuss alpha2 problems:
  • 1. Here?
    2. On the above mentioned Mandriva thread?
    3. On the Mandriva Bugzilla? Though MandrivaBugzilla/Browse/MandrivaLinux seems little used, with only:
    • 1 entry found by searching "moondrake"
      5 under "alpha2"
      16 "alpha 2" (mostly older m2010 and 2011 ones)

The situation is a whole "Work in Progress"...
so there is still confusion about infrastructure

We are waiting to have a common Home for web, forum, wiki, ecc...

The only sure thing is that Foundation really exists!

You must wait, there will be some conferences in the next weeks,
then the situation will become clearer, about the new infrastructure.

BTW, the distro will be rebased on final ROSA 2012.1 or its freeze:
The freeze for ROSA 2012.1 should happens on December 10-11

bye, NicCo

Hello, welcome Mayavimmer Image

This is just a Mandriva news, with some info for download and the like.
Mayavimmer wrote:Should we discuss alpha2 problems:

The above mentioned topic seems to be the proper place, for now.
