MIB Mandriva International Backports is proud to present you a new program: MIB-LiveToFlash

Starting from an .iso file, or a Mandriva One Live CD, you will be able to get a pendrive (starting from 4 Gb, better if 8Gb or more) equipped with Mandriva Linux system and therefore a product similar to Mandriva Flash, but totally for free.

You just follow a few simple steps, and you'll have a portable OS, which can save documents and personal files and data in the second Data partion, while your programs could write their bookmarks, configs and saves, in the persistent /home so that they don't vanish when you'll close the session.

The /root partition is persistent, so you'll be able to install your favorite software and to carry on it with you forever.

This software will use the first 4Gb as maximum, and in the remaining space will be automatically created an universal FAT32 partition for Data, reachable from other SO, such as Windows and Mac.

The program has a friendly GUI, available in English, French, Spanish, Russian and Italian language and it works with all Mandriva ONE, it could work also with user draklive images iso, and/or MUG remaster (MCNL, MIB, MLO, MUD, ecc.) at one condition: there must be NO changes from original ONE structure, such regarding label name, folders structure and paths.
You can choose and change label name for Linux and second Data partition, with the command:
livetoflash label1 label2 (label2 would be active from upcoming version 3.1)

Image
Due to a known bug in Mandriva, you can not run a program that operates in root mode if launched from the user menu (problem with kdesu and gnomesu) so you must launch the program only from a root konsole, like that:

Code: Select all

[root@8 ~]# livetoflash

Code: Select all

[root@8 ~]# livetoflash

Tips and tricks:

in V3 you can change the label for #1 linux partition,

Code: Select all

[root@8 ~]# livetoflash MYOS
The final name of your disk will be: MYOS

in V 3.1, you can change both the labels of the two partition,

Code: Select all

[root@8 ~]# livetoflash MYOS MyData
- livetoflash -l (language reset)
- livetoflash -i (set MIB icon instead of Mandriva Star one)
- livetoflash label1 label2 (set labels for linux & data partitions)

since V 3.2, you can
-livetoflash -h (help panel shows a list with all parameters)
-livetoflash -r (recover/reset persistent data with new file, if broken)

1 > Use a Flash memory with a newly formatted FAT32 partition: it is always advisable to clear your flash, create a FAT32 partition, format:
In V3 this operaton should be not more necessary, all this cleaning steps are made in background by the program itself

2 > Mount and unmount properly, every time: Unlike partitions may remain locked into some folder/medias and harm

3 > Lay the ISO images to put onto MIBFlash, on a local H.D. and not on a removable external USB HD: transactions, most likely, would lead a MIB-Flash not correctly written and so not working

4 > At the begin, but only for the first time, the usual questions will be asked to specify the language, time zone, the keyboard mapping, which will be saved in persistent mode, so the second reboot onwards, the system will start more quickly, directly and without bother us with the usual questions.

5 > you can add the repository, and then an ample selection of programs that we prefer, but we must avoid absolutely under penalty system:
-Update of the kernel or proprietary drivers

Experiment with your MIBFLASH, no worries you seize: we can always reformat the Flash memory stick and prepare it again, and it doesn't cost anything, just a bit of time for its preparation ...

Image
Approfondimenti e consigli:

Code: Select all

[root@8 ~]# livetoflash MYOS

Code: Select all

[root@8 ~]# livetoflash MYOS MyData
- livetoflash label1 label2 (set labels for linux & data partitions)

Dalla versione V 3.2, altri parametri utilizzabili
-livetoflash -h (help panel shows a list with all parameters)
-livetoflash -r (recover/reset persistent data with new file, if broken)

diversamente potrebbe rimanere qualche cartella bloccata in /media e far danni

Image New V 3.3 (build 1009) version is ready and available, read features / changelog!

IMPORTANT
After many tests, we have found that Mandriva ONE 2010.0 performs better than ONE 2010.1

In ONE 2010.1 there is tracker indexing all the /home and wasting space and many resources,
differently in ONE 2010.0 there is not an indexing service (like beagle in the Free 2010.0 DVD),

so we strongly suggest to stop that service or remove it

Funziona!

Ho subito aggiunto tutti i repo e installato alcuni progs come transmission vlc audacity, tema satanico, fusion-icon e pacchetti vari. al riavvio è tutto come l'ho lasciato, tema progs e tutto.

LiveToFlash è un programma fantastico...fico...magnifico....eccellente... :D :D :D

Thanks very much, I'm reading just now
Have you already noticed that yesterday we released the V3 version?
I suggest you read this Topic all again, there are many changes and improvements...

In the comment, warlock35 is saying a very wrong and dangerous thing!

I don't speak french, and dago68 isn't present now to help me, I'm just registered in MLO portal
so I prepared this text, can you check and tell me if is written correctly, or answer directly to him?
Bonjour

Version V 3.1 is very close!
As soon as possible, after some small functionality tests, if all is right, we hope to release 3.1

We received the spanish translation (thanks to Tobal),
if we'll receive other language translations, we are just in time to add these in 3.1 version

Changelog - v 3.1 (only partial)
- max size for persistent partition increased from 3Gb to 4Gb
- Added support for 2011.0
- Added Spanish language
New parameters:
# livetoflash -l (language reset)
# livetoflash -i (set MIB icon instead of Star)
# livetoflash label1 label2 (labels for linux & data partitions)
- Some small code cleanup and fixes

Post by NicCo »

You could want to try V 3.1, we strongly suggest it!
Persistence is bigger and much more robust, "df" works again!
Almost all errors are gone away

Already working on v. 3.2

Changelog for 3.2 (work in progress)
- It will include some recovery commands to recover or replace any damaged persistence data file, without to be forced to generate the whole MIB FLASH structure again and losing personal files data in Data partition, or having to move them, first into another device and after to move them again into Data...
- Now esperimenting other file systems for the second Data partition, expecially ext3/ext4, if well working, will be included, as an option
- Many others new features and new parameters...
LiveToFlash can works with all Mandriva ONE, it could work also with user draklive images iso, and/or MUG remaster (MCNL, MIB, MLO, MUD, ecc.) at one condition: there must be NO changes from original ONE structure, such regarding label name, folders structure and paths...

- MIB (Mandriva International Backports) - http://mib.pianetalinux.org/
- A much safer way to select the size of persistent data file
- Fixed a partition problem: now "fdisk -l" shows correct configs
- Added Swedish language support
- Some small code cleanup and fixes
+ New parameter added to command:
-livetoflash -h (help panel shows a list with all parameters)
-livetoflash -r (recover/reset persistent data with new file, if broken)

Most of the errors found were caused by problems in Mandriva core, parted problems, zenity bugs:
We had to find solutions and/or workarounds for all those, wasting a lot of time for this reason  8-)
