Mozilla Firefox 5.0 in /testing, please we need feedback

Post by NicCo »

Mozilla Firefox 5.0 in /testing with all the the languages available, please we need feedback

Mandriva 2010.2 - 64bit

Code: Select all

urpmi.addmedia FF5 --update http://mirror.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.2/64/testing/Firefox-5.0/
urpmi --auto-select
urpmi.removemedia FF5
Mandriva 2010.2 - 32bit

Code: Select all

urpmi.addmedia FF5 --update http://mirror.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.2/32/testing/Firefox-5.0/
urpmi --auto-select
urpmi.removemedia FF5
We suggest to install one extension to speedup network:

I use Fasterfox, Turbo mode, with Preloading feature enabled
https://addons.mozilla.org/it/firefox/a ... Fasterfox/

another very good one alternative could be Tweak Network
http://www.bitstorm.org/extensions/tweak/

MIB-ff5 really faster than Cooker-ff5. (without any speedup extensions)
Nothing to say more. :D

You installed the 2010.2 MIB version of FF5 on your 2011 rc1 32bit? I understand you correctly?

if so, the mainly difference surely lie into the i686 rpms used by MIB for the 32bit architecture, and you must know, we proposed this to mandriva since 2007, but they said i586 and i686 are fast as equal, which was once one of the major reasons for confrontation and fighting between the boys of the MIB with the mandriva packagers...

so we have preferred to remain on our ideas, continuing on our way using the i686 as a platform to build for 32bit, and continuing to support users, including we ourselves, we want the best performance possible, and we do not care support still very old Pentium I / II (not i686), if someone had some still functioning, such as Mandriva seems to have ... (i686 i586 works better than starting from PIII CPU or AMD K6)

Mandriva has always said that there are NOT significant differences between the i586 and i686, in terms of speed, as opposed to what it has always been said and repeated by the MIB

You could imagine, that when we'll start to package for 2011, and we'll rebuild our FF5 on 2011, using 2011 native build platform with new glibc, gcc 4.6.1, rpm5, ecc., FF5 will ben even much more faster than this one you tested now...

To start packaging something for Mandriva 2011, we'll wait for the "freeze time", i think around the rc2 release, so all libs and dependencies versions are final

We use our personal PC to build, our home ADSL line to upload the files, and of course we do not like rebuilding the exact same packages a few days / weeks of difference!

We are only users...

Everything seems to be fine in 2010.2 i686. The only problem I have is bouncing FF icon when I start it from menu. It's jumping for 30 seconds or so after FF already started.

The problem is very common for FF, it already happened many times in past after some new version releases. Like this:

Core i7-3770 / 4 Gb RAM / Gigabyte Z77-D3H / ASUS ENGTS250 / Rosa 2012.1 i686

I saw this only on beta/RC (mdv/mib ff no matter).
2010.2 is fine.

Reduce the value of "Startup indication timeout" in KDE system settings will help solve this problem. (30 -> 3)
