se posso dire la mia, sul mio sistema ho visto che per reinstallare i driver nvidia dopo una disinstallazione è sempre necessario prima installare il driver Vesa e fare un reboot.

- cancellato i driver nvidia precedenti
urpme -a nvidia-long-lived
- da XFdrake, ho scelto il driver Xorg VESA, al posto del Nuveau, ho salvato e riavviato
- Al riavvio in KDE, ho di nuovo lanciato XFdrake, ho scelto Nvidia proprietario, ha scaricato ed installato i driver, ho configurato monitor e risoluzione, ho salvato, mi ha suggerito di riavviare
- al riavvio, ho di nuovo Nvidia funzionante (anche se vedo ancora il warning di cui ho gia scritto circa ABI 19.1):
la barra di KDE è grigio trasparente e dovrebbe essere tutto a posto per ciò che riguarda il KDE, ma controllando il compositing noto che è passato in Xrender Nativo > se commuto in OpenGL non va, si rifiuta!

la barra di KDE è grigio trasparente e dovrebbe essere tutto a posto per ciò che riguarda il KDE,
e controllando il compositing noto che adesso posso commutarlo in OpenGL Nativo, poi salvo.

Ho installato Mesa 9.1.1 e Xorg 1.14.0 su Rosa Fresh x64
Ho dovuto mettere il secondo repo perchè altrimenti non avevo il 3D.
Adesso il 3D funziona ed è molto più fluido, sembra che tutto vada bene.

Basta aggiungere all'xorg.conf, nella sezione "Device" la riga:

La prima dovrebbe essere più performante del default ed è un bel po' che è in sviluppo, quindi dovrebbe essere anche relativamente stabile; la seconda è del tutto sperimentale:
la prova è solo per vedere se funziona con il xserver 1.14.0 il nostro build della necessaria libreria...

i settaggi sono automatici e sono quelli che vengono presi al volo
in passato, almeno con X13, se lanciavo X13 per configurare il display,
al riavvio avevo solo una schermata nera e tutto risultava bloccato...

Nelle mie fide VM, ad esempio, sono installati tanti driver che "potrebbero funzionare" (modeset, vesa, fbdev e ovviamente il vmwgfx) e, se lascio fare al server, di solito piglia quello sbagliato e, in ogni caso, come faccio a testarli se non posso scegliere io quello che mi interessa o un workaround in caso quello non funga?
Comunque non ti serve tutto l'xorg.conf, ma solo la sua sezione "Device", relativa al driver video in uso:
puoi farti un piccolo snippet con solo quella ed le istruzioni necessarie, chiamarlo p.es. "20-intel.conf" e piazzarlo in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d...
e al prossimo riavvio il server userà quella configurazione.
Te ne puoi anche fare più di una, se devi testare driver differenti, tenerle nella dir /etc/X11 e copiarle o toglierle da xorg.conf.d a seconda di quanto ti serve.
P.es., per il driver vmwgfx nelle mie VM, ho questo snippet di configurazione, chiamato 20-vmwgfx.conf e contenente solo quanto segue:
