Kernel nrjQL 3.11.4 for ROSA 2012 2012.1 & OM 2013.0 cooker

Kernel 3.11.4 QL (Quantum Leap) for ROSA Marathon (2012.0), ROSA Desktop.Fresh 2012 (2012.1) and Mandriva 2010, MDV2011.0, OpenMandriva 2013.0 and Cooker
Image
To check the build status from ABF (in realtime)
https://abf.rosalinux.ru/kernels_3_11x/ ... uild_lists

INFO about the SRPM build possibilities and rpm availability:
For ROSA Marathon we'll build Kernels LTS: 3.0, 3.2, 3.4, all the latest kernels up to the 3.11 series...
For ROSA Fresh we are building all Kernel versions starting only from the 3.6 to the most recent series
For "Cooker" we are building all Kernel versions starting only from the 3.8 to the most recent series
For old distros Mandriva 2010 and 2011, we are maintaining build compatibility: you can also rebuild,
but we CANNOT prepare the rpms for You, as we have no chance to build with ABF or in our own PCs
General INFO about the new project - Read carefully!
nrj >>> nrjQL, the Next Kernel Generation, a step forward...

nrjQL suffix is the new codename > http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_leap

Metaphorically, quantum leap also means a "quantum leap" or like a radical paradigm shift in science, technology, or in other contexts.
Metaforicamente, quantum leap indica anche un salto di qualità o un radicale mutamento di paradigma nella scienza, nella tecnologia o in altri contesti.

Starting from the kernel 3.7 series, we started using a new source NRJ model V4 (much improved)
for this 3.11.4 version now we have built only 3 flavours: nrjQL-desktop, nrjQL-realtime, nrjQL-laptop

For all kernel 3.5 and 3.6 versions, we used NRJ model v3
For Kernel from 3.0 to 3.4 series we used model v2, info here >>> viewtopic.php?f=38&t=3551

It's a very complete flavours list
  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop = mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop-vm > like mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
It's the one optimized for desktop use in combo with some Virtual Machine (for example VMWare products)
  • kernel-nrjQL-realtime > like mainline kernel-nrj-realtime plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
It's the one optimized for all realtime and pro audio apps (DAW) > examples: Jackd, Ardour, Rosegarden, ecc...
  • kernel-nrjQL-laptop > like mainline kernel-nrj-laptop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
with laptop configs and lower internal frequency, ONDEMAND profile to improve battery lasting
  • kernel-nrjQL-netbook > like mainline kernel-nrj-netbook plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
with netbook configs and lower internal frequency, ONDEMAND profile to improve battery lasting
  • kernel-nrjQL-server > like mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
to be used in a generic server environment (like LAMP) and other server apps
  • kernel-nrjQL-server-games > like mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
to be used in a game server PC for 3D FPS games, for example CounterStrike
  • kernel-nrjQL-server-computing > like mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI +UKSM
to be used in a cumputational server when you need some less times to file encoder, converter, and build programs
Then we have all PAE flavours, and for now only one CPU oriented (new Intel) + PAE
  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop-pae
  • kernel-nrjQL-realtime-pae
  • kernel-nrjQL-laptop-pae
  • kernel-nrjQL-netbook-pae
these have been optimized for all Intel cpus greater than Pentium4 (starting from Centrino upto I3/I5/I7)
  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop-core2
  • kernel-nrjQL-desktop-core2-pae

Here my feedback: :D
now I'm downloading nrjQL 3.11.4 from ABF repo to install & test,
generally I install all the rpms prepared from my own local rebuild,
but this time I want to try if also the rpms built from ABF are OK...

Here my install log:

VMWare 10 build is Ok for Kernel 3.11, the Nvidia available NOT (need proper patching)
so probably when at boot nvidia try to build start some errors and stop also vmware module building

Grazie Nicco, siamo dunque nelle mani di Nvidia. Speriamo che siano veloci ad introdurre le modifiche, visto che il problema è stato individuato e una possibile soluzione verificata.

If I'm reading correctly and one needs the nvidia 304.xxx driver then one is out of luck with kernel 3.11.xx? Or am I missing something?
Thanks,

In my opinion, moving omv2013 from kernel lts 3.10 with a long support (2-3 years)
to kernel 3.11 whose support will end just the next month, it might be a risky move.

There are none proprietary drivers, no Ati no Nvidia, natively compatible with 3.11,
all of them need proper patching to work with 3.11...

I'm inclined to agree with you. However the only kernel in OMV 2013 repos today is 3.11.5... I suspect some are concerned about the kernel panic on startup that a lot of us have or had with the 3.10 flavors.

My understanding is that to use nvidia drivers of any version with kernel-3.11 flavors will require patching.

In my case there is no OpenMandriva version (again!) for GeForce 6 and 7 hardware which calls for nvidia-304.108 currently. This driver (meaning the nvidia-304.108.run) does work with 3.10 kernel versions.

I currently have:

Code: Select all

# uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.11.5-nrjQL-desktop-1omv #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 16 16:27:30 MSK 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
working with nvidia-304.108.run and patch from here:

Thanks,
Ben
