Kernel nrjQL 3.15.10-99 with better HyperThread and Realtime

Post by NicCo »

Kernel nrjQL 3.15.10-99 with better HyperThread and Realtime! - with the current SMT Nice 6!

A new technology in the BFS scheduler, better responsiveness and realtime for all PC with HT (HyperThread)
and the kernel will perform in a perfect realtime behaviour... , (despite this may cost 0.1 less cpu throughput)

It's effective only with a PC equipped with Cpus Intel HT(HypeThread) or AMD CMT (Bulldozer/Piledriver)

It improves the performance of foreground applications at the expense of backgound ones,
so your desktop/gui/applications will remain fast even if you run folding@home, mprime, seti@home etc.,
but those background tasks will slow down more.

The News has been announced some days ago, I feel this Topic extremely interesting, read here:
http://ck-hack.blogspot.it/2014/08/smt-nice-3.html
http://ck-hack.blogspot.it/2014/08/smth ... uling.html
......
An even more dramatic example is what happens with realtime tasks, which these days most audio backends on linux use (usually through pulseaudio). Running a realtime task concurrently with a SCHED_NORMAL nice 0 task on a single core means the realtime task will get 100% CPU and the nice 0 task will get zero CPU time. Enable hyperthreading and suddenly the realtime task only runs at 60% of its normal speed even with a heavily niced +19 task running in the background.
......

I have studied immediately the thing and I've already prepared and properly configured our nrjQL flavours, sent to ABF rebuild, now all rpms are available, the different experimental rpms have as release number -99
Kernel-3.15.10-99-ONE > https://abf.rosalinux.ru/kernels_3_15x_ ... .10-99-ONE
Build tasks completed > https://abf.rosalinux.ru/kernels_3_15x_ ... uild_lists

About project:
This is an experimental nrjQL branch with more responsiveness and realtime behaviour, although the overall throughput may be slightly decreased - all this will be noticeable only when we have cpu equipped with HT (HypeThread) > SMT/Hyperthreading, nice and scheduling policies - It improves the performance of foreground applications at the expense of backgound ones, so your desktop/gui/applications will remain fast even if you run folding@home, mprime, seti@home etc., but those background tasks will slow down more.

I've already asked to our friend Mario Moles (our professional realtime tester), if he can execute asap some massive realtime tests with comparisons

If it works fine, we may be also in time to insert this mode in the kernel for 2014.1, just changing the release number from -99 to -1 or -2 (bump version)

I have just installed this advanced kernel into my Ultrabook (no HT equipped):
it boots ok, works fine, none improvments, none regressions and that's good!

Code: Select all

[nicco@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.15.10-nrjQL-laptop-99omv #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Aug 16 23:34:12 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

[nicco@localhost ~]$ inxi
CPU~Dual core Intel Core2 Duo CPU U9400 (-MCP-) clocked at Min:800.000Mhz Max:1400.000Mhz Kernel~3.15.10-nrjQL-laptop-99omv x86_64 Up~22 min Mem~1038.1/3887.4MB HDD~128.0GB(69.9% used) Procs~200 Client~Shell inxi~1.9.18
I remind you that this kernel release has the HT SMT Nice 6, that is very optimized, polished and mature compared with our first experiment containing the kernel 3.15.8 with SMT Nice 2:
the same BFS scheduler with HT SMT Nice 6 will be used by default from kernel nrjQL 3.16, as default...

I hope that someone amongst you will install the official 3.15.10-1 and the experimental 3.15.10-99 (ht) rpms (from the different path) into your PCs with HT, make your comparisons with some tests, please, report me Your feedback about...

Installed 3.15.10-99 on my notebook (Asus X53SD-SX191V); this is my hw:

Code: Select all

[root@localhost ~]# inxi
CPU~Quad core Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU (-HT-MCP-) clocked at Min:800.078Mhz Max:2066.023Mhz Kernel~3.15.10-nrjQL-desktop-99omv x86_64 Up~40 min Mem~1218.6/3731.6MB HDD~500.1GB(1.3% used) Procs~216 Client~Shell inxi~1.9.18

There is an increase in startup time compared to build 1:
3.15.10-nrjQL-desktop-1:
[root@localhost ~]# cat /etc/mandriva-release
OpenMandriva Lx release 2014.1 (Phosphorus) for x86_64
[root@localhost ~]# uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.15.10-nrjQL-desktop-1omv #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Aug 16 22:20:21 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[root@localhost ~]# systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 4.890s (kernel) + 2.692s (initrd) + 24.534s (userspace) = 32.117s

3.15.10-nrjQL-desktop-99:
[root@localhost ~]# cat /etc/mandriva-release
OpenMandriva Lx release 2014.1 (Phosphorus) for x86_64
[root@localhost ~]# uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.15.10-nrjQL-desktop-99omv #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Aug 16 22:04:31 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[root@localhost ~]# systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 4.887s (kernel) + 2.924s (initrd) + 26.389s (userspace) = 34.201s (Boot 1)
Startup finished in 4.908s (kernel) + 2.969s (initrd) + 25.968s (userspace) = 33.847s (Boot 2)
Except this, my notebook is more smoothly and look more responsive also with a normal use (web browsing, movie playback with vlc, etc ...).
The stability remains the same, no freeze or strange reaction of system.
Great job NicCo! 8-)

HI!
This is my test:

Code: Select all

[mario@localhost ~]$ inxi
CPU~Quad core AMD A8-3510MX APU with Radeon HD Graphics (-MCP-) clocked at 1800.000 Mhz Kernel~3.15.10-nrjQL-realtime-99omv x86_64 Up~31 min Mem~2048.0/5447.2MB HDD~120.0GB(65.8% used) Procs~222 Client~Shell inxi~1.9.18
[mario@localhost ~]$
HDD=SSD

SW used:
amarok with a pls 5 days;
rosegarden on dssi (audio);
kmid on midi (fluidsynth);
frescobaldi with lilypond in esecution;
chrome and firefox with several tabs each;

RESULT:
EXCELLENT yield of both 1 and 99
xruns zero without having tampered with the file /etc/security/limits.conf.
moral:
for me there is no difference between the two and if there is invisible.
I think now that your kernel has reached such a level that is difficult to capture defects or performance to differ materially.

I inform you that I have silently replaced the sources of
- kernel 3.15.10-1
and
- kernel 3.15.10-99 (with HT/SMT Nice 6)

Code: Select all

%changelog

* Sat Aug 30 2014 Nicolo' Costanza <abitrules@yahoo.it> 3.15.10-99
+ update to 3.15.10 (EOL) - stable (replacement release)
- update ReiserFS4:
- /patches-NRJ/0004-reiser4-for-3.15.2.patch
- update BFS scheduler to 455, plus fixes, plus HT/SMT Nice 6 and configs:
- /patches-QL/0001_3.15-sched-bfs-455-2.patch
- /patches-QL/0002_ck-3.16-revert-KVM-workaround-due-to-proper-cond_res.patch
- /patches-QL/0003_bfs449-smtnice-6.patch
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------

* Sat Aug 16 2014 Nicolo' Costanza <abitrules@yahoo.it> 3.15.10-99
+ update to 3.15.10 (EOL) - stable
- add drm/radeon: Adding UVD handle basis fps estimation v2
- http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/dri-devel/2014-August/065766.html
- add ReiserFS4 for kernel 3.15
- /patches-NRJ/0004-reiser4-for-3.15.1.patch
- /patches-NRJ/0005-3.15.1-reiser4-basic-discard-support.patch
- SMT Nice 6 > http://ck-hack.blogspot.it/2014/08/smt-nice-3.html
- SMT/Hyperthreading, nice and scheduling policies: an experimental
- advanced branch with more responsiveness and realtime behaviour,
- although the overall throughput may be slightly decreased.
- It's effective only when we have cpu equipped with HT(HypeThread)
- It improves the performance of foreground applications at the expense of backgound ones,
- your desktop/gui/applications will remain fast even if you run folding@home, mprime, seti@home etc.,
- but those background tasks will slow down more.
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Now there is the 455 version of bfs scheduler with great speed improvements
and some long time issues that have been squashed and, at the end, solved!

Fixed issues hitting all kernel nrjQL since 3.13 (3.14, 3.14, 3.15 were affected)
All these ugly troubles now are solved!
  • Suspend / Resume lock > it was happening with Atheros WiFi (ath9k)
    making the resume impossible...
  • Dell powersaving not working properly > i8k module lock/not working
  • Ksoftirq provoked slowdowns eating all the 100% of the cpus/cores
  • KVM performances were not so brilliant...

text taken from a msg received in the CK blog
http://ck-hack.blogspot.com/2014/08/bfs ... 5684447625
... it is working perfectly, much faster than the official scaled kernel, the performance is much better, taking 30% less time on the task of converting video, best gaming performance and processes in parallel and indexing faster.
I suggest you to replace the kernel 3.15.10 with the newer rebuild
even if you have already installed it, so remove it and install again,
currently I have rebuilt only 1 flavour, that is kernel-nrjQL-desktop

Tomorrow, I should add another improvement that should gain a 3%
More Info > http://cchalpha.blogspot.it/
-- resched_best_idle() bug fix get 3% performance improvement
After my testing, I'll replace again the 3.15.10 sources and I'll rebuild them once again... :D
I'll let you know...

thanks, for Your attention
bye, NicCo

A new release with the -99.2 as release number:
I suggest you this update, then report feedback!

3.15.10-99 > for Kernel nrjQL (HT/SMT improved)
http://abf-downloads.rosalinux.ru/kerne ... epository/

example:
http://abf-downloads.rosalinux.ru/kerne ... x86_64.rpm

currently available only nrjQL-desktop flavour

In this release we have added some patches from Alex Chen, to be tested:
those are to avoid rescheduling amongst the tasks in status of "idle" and "deactivated"
in this way there will be less things that scheduler should execute, and more speed...

We may esteem a gain about 3% with low cpu load, and some more with high loads

After having used a bit, only a couple of hours, my impressions are full positive,
so far so long, all is really fine and none regressions have been found...

my first impressions are:
- faster webpages loading, faster visualization, and faster tabs switching
- smoother play of Full HD videos, especially with hw not capable of that

New release for kernel 3.15.10 (I remind you that 3.15.10-99.2 has became the official 3.15.10-2, this is 3.15.10-3)
this is intendeed as official update for OpenMandriva Lx 2014.1, if everything will be ok, and then will pass the QA

The most important thing is the adoption of new disk I/O scheduler, BFQ v7r6:
this should diminish the overall boot time, especially with all the fast devices like the SSD, by 5 or more seconds...

For our first tests, I have enabled four flavours only: nrjQL-desktop, nrjQL-realtime, nrjQL-laptop and nrjQL-server

Builds in progress:
https://abf.rosalinux.ru/kernels_3_15x/ ... uild_lists

Below, you can read the full changelog

Re: Kernel nrjQL 3.15.10-99 with better HyperThread and Real

Post by andreas »

Windows Boot Manager is not yet supported by grub-mkconfig.

Code: Select all

# requested changes by Colin Close: to test if that may fix the UEFI issues
sed -i -e 's,CONFIG_EFIVAR_FS=m,CONFIG_EFIVAR_FS=y,g' %{patches_dir}/configs/*.config
# https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface
sed -i -e 's,CONFIG_EFI_VARS=y,CONFIG_EFI_VARS=n,g' %{patches_dir}/configs/*.config
CONFIG_EFIVAR_FS=m > da modulo a > CONFIG_EFIVAR_FS=y > ovvero abilitato permanentemente
CONFIG_EFI_VARS=y > da abilitato a > CONFIG_EFI_VARS=n > ovvero disabilitato permanentemente

Code: Select all

$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.17.1-nrj-desktop-1rosa.lts #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Oct 26 15:11:15 CET 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

HI!
This is my test:

Code: Select all

[mario@localhost ~]$ inxi
CPU~Quad core AMD A8-3510MX APU with Radeon HD Graphics (-MCP-) clocked at Min:800.000Mhz Max:1200.000Mhz Kernel~3.15.10-nrjQL-realtime-3omv x86_64 Up~12:47 Mem~2283.3/5447.4MB HDD~120.0GB(82.7% used) Procs~227 Client~Shell inxi~1.9.18
[mario@localhost ~]$
HDD=SSD

SW used:
amarok with a pls 5 days;
rosegarden on dssi (audio);
kmid on midi (fluidsynth);
frescobaldi with lilypond in esecution;
chrome and firefox with several tabs each;
vlc:
gimp.
RESULT:
EXCELLENT
The only negative is that sometimes when the system boots it seems that the video card driver
does not load properly and you have to move around in the dark to turn off and turn on the computer.

When will be available new kernels 3.16 or 3.17?
