Kernel 2.6.38.6 + -NRJ and -NRJ-PAE for 2010.1, 2010.2

Post by NicCo »

Kernel 2.6.38.6 NRJ and -NRJ-PAE for Mandriva Linux 2010.1 2010.2
Changelog: 2.6.38.6 > http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ ... g-2.6.38.6

Kernel 2.6.38.6 folders: All kernels are inside separate folders (when ready...)
Mandriva 2010.2 - 32bit -> http://pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.2/32/p ... s/2.6.38.6
Mandriva 2010.2 - 64bit -> http://pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.2/64/p ... s/2.6.38.6

Available in 4 different flavours:
  • kernel-nrj-desktop > for 64bit and 32bit multimedia desktop, 32bit is limited using not more than 3 Gb ram,
  • kernel-nrj-pae-desktop > exclusively for 32bit (NOT 64!), when you have more than 3 Gb ram (upto 64Gb),
  • kernel-desktop,
  • kernel-server.
Please, avoid to install and use kernel-desktop, use instead NRJ or NRJ-PAE!
kernel-desktop config, we found it's very unresponsive for desktop and multimedia apps:
so we accept feedbacks only for -NRJ and -NRJ-PAE, and eventually -server (for server)

I remember you that:
  • only recent versions of vmware 7.1.4/vmplayer 3.1.4 work properly with 2.6.38.x
  • only recent proprietary ati drivers 8.841 or newer works properly with 2.6.38.x
  • some old wi-fi drivers could have problems with kernel 2.6.38.x

Kernel 2.6.38.6, Energy & PAE for mdv 2010.1, 2010.2

Image
Image Let's give a surge of pure energy to our brand new Mandriva Linux!

Image LEGENDA:
kernel-nrj-desktop (as for energy) : for low latency and multimedia desktop (better for remote desktop control, and DAW apps like Ardour, Jammin, Jackit, Hydrogen, ecc...)
kernel-nrj-pae-desktop (as for energy plus PAE): for 32bit, the same as energy plus support ram up to 64Gb
kernel-desktop for desktop standard (Not suggested: slow and unresponsive for desktop and multimedia use!)
kernel-server only for server applications like LAMP, slow and not suggested in Desktop PC

KERNEL ENERGY MIB
makes your PC much more responsive even under stress, when you have so many programs running, and when you have the CPU close to 100% usage, if you use many VM, multimedia programs, and even if you use remote desktop apps

ENERGY > NRJ so name become > kernel-nrj-desktop-2.6.3X.X

Main features will be:
* full manbo patchset
* full preempt, low latency, less debug;

You may have installed concurrently kernel 2.6.31.x and/or 2.6.33.x standard and the "nrj" or "nrj-pae" one

Image LEGENDA:

* full manbo patchset
* full preempt, low latency, less debug;

Kernel 2.6.38.6 NRJ has Mike Gilbraith's new scheduler_autogroup enabled by default
Requested by a lot of users: It brings a huge speed boost to the desktops cutting desktop latency by a factor of ten!
Read here for more info: http://mib.pianetalinux.org/mib/forum/v ... =20&t=2451

So, if you want test its effects and side-effects, you can enable/disable the CONFIG_SCHED_AUTOGROUP=y

On the fly, from a root konsole, typing

To disable Autogroup

Code: Select all

echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/sched_autogroup_enabled
To enable Autogroup again

Code: Select all

echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sched_autogroup_enabled
at boot, from Grub, adding to your kernel line the string, you disable Autogroup

Code: Select all

noautogroup

Re: Kernel 2.6.38.6 + -NRJ and -NRJ-PAE for 2010.1, 2010.2

Post by jumbo »

ciao a tutti ...

ciao a tutti

Hello!
In daily use, perfect! no problem!. But even this version, I've been doing live dvd with all mib kernels, and have had no problems, and I have been unable 2.6.38 generating functional iso. It's something about the kernel 2.6.38! . I've tried everything, and frustrated, return to 2.6.36.4, I've become a run draklive (0.9.3, or from svn), and works well (removing module squashfs_lzma).

Saved the problem of squashfs_lzma, step --loop --master always complete, but the iso is useless, it begins to boot but then hang with the kernel debugging messages.
