Re: cpufreq pb

Post by NicCo »

This Topic is becoming really very interesting! - We could start some experiments...

I remember that I used ONDEMAND in the past and it was predefined behaviour with MDV 2009.1, if i remember well
I had no slowdown with ONDEMAND vs PERFORMANCE, and I don't remember any freezes or other side-effects...

While the most developers affirm that ONDEMAND is NOT more needed, some users could find instead that this mode
while doesn't add any noticeable slowdown, if helps to maintain our PC cooler, and this could be not a bad thing at all :)

If some of You will help me with some testing, I can prepare the same kernel versions also with the value ONDEMAND as default in all flavours
and I'll store these kernels into different paths so You could install the default kernels flavours and these ONDEMAND enabled to observe the differences using your PC in the real world...

Then, if the results from these experiments will be good, with no slowdown and regressions, we could change the default behaviour of some kernel flavours, for example all nrj-netbook or also nrj-desktop, with ONDEMAND enabled as default value

For Windows there are some benchmark about using cooling apps like cpuide, cpucool, or others that act like ONDEMAND on linux kernel
http://www.benchtest.com/cooler.html
Let me know if some of You are interested in helping us with testing this stuff in many different following kernels

i found there is such a pb with other distrib and cpu

see here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/971091

it is said this is a kernel pb :

"the problem was coming from frequency update code"

in comment #6 and #8 they supply a patch

perhaps if you compile kernel desktop nrj pae 3.1.6 with this patch i can test it.

Surely, but I think it's better use the 3.1.10 version to apply the patch
and BTW we have to rebuild 3.1.10 for MDV 2010 32bit, because we missed PAE flavours

if you want the patch to be applied to old 3.1.6, I can prepare only the SRPM,
but I can't rebuild:
You could rebuild by yourself with simple commands that I could teach to you,

let me know....

hello thanks to dedicate your time to my pb

i follow several tracks :
- bios pb but it is updated
- coll n quiet and nvidia conflict (old pb solved several years ago by nvidia)
- kernel pb (see my previous post)
- ram bios settings
- cpu bios settings
- FSB rate (my ram is a ddr2-800. so 800 MHz is a maximum then perhaps i must decrease the FSB clock ?)

i explored the bios ram settings then i discovered in auto mode
the ram settings is 5-6-6-18 and ECC is enable

but according to kingston doc it is 5-5-5-15 and non ECC ram
then
i set the kingston settings

i explored the bios cpu settings then i discovered in auto mode
the multiplier is 13,5X but according the doc it must be 13X
then
i set the multiplier to 13x

now i don't meet any freeze but i wait for 2 days to declare this pb is solved

for the kernel 3.1.10 i will use it if there is no bluetooth pb

for the patch perhaps you will wait 2 days to know if the freeze pb is solved ?

It's not question of two days, I'll be able to work again in 3.1.10 only after some weeks

I must complete new kernel (NEXT GEN with BFS/BFQ/TOI), did you read something?

I hope you could be find interesting the TuxOnIce function, watch the yotube video,
it should e a default feature in the new kernel-nrj-laptop flavours

If the new project will be a success, even the kernel 3.1.10 will have some new clothes
I mean a new version and this time with CK1 / BFS / BFQ / TOI

and the first kernel on which Im working just now is the recent 3.5.3 version

Re: cpufreq pb

tweaking ram, cpu, fsb bios settings does not solve the pb
then
i revert all to auto.

i explore 2 new tracks :

1 with MS windows there is also many pb with cool n quiet and they are solved by updating frequency scaling management driver, or power management software

so i think there is something weird about kernel cpufreq and powernow part and powernow-k8 driver

i found this
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=246956

it's my case :
- heavy load (virtuoso + vlc displaying a tv stream), you see frequency changing -> no freeze during 5 h
- light load you see frequency changing -> freeze after 10 mn

what do you think about this patch ?

2. my diagnosis (light load -> freeze) and reading this url above drives me to think there is a pb with moving to or from the lowest frequency 1000 MHz (the available frequencies are : 1000, 1800, 2000, 2200, 2400, 2600)
then
i forbbid the lowest frequency 1000 MHz then ondemand uses only frequencies >= 1800. let us wait this experiment

Re: cpufreq pb

forbid 1000 MHz is not the solution but a good workaround.

with this feature i have no freeze.

all we know :
- this pb occurs with kernel flavout with pae enable : i586 server and desktop +pae, x86_64
- there is a pb moving from or to 1000 MHz during light load
- the delay to crash system is a random delay at startup, during opening a kde session, several minutes or hours
- the pb is around Cool n quiet, kernel cpufreq and powernow part, powernow-k8 driver

due to lack of knowledge i can't go further

i found a tool x86infoandcontrol

in the doc they speak of sign of undervoltage : freeze, reboot, black screen, hang

it is exactly what i have.

thus now we know for 1000 MHZ the voltage set by cpufreq is too low

how to set a good voltage for 1000 MHz and what voltage ?

the only thing i can suggest
when you undervolt or overvolt, never surpass 10% +/- above the cpu specs

Since latest kernels, we decided to enable new tools in kernels:
cpupower and perf

Kernel 3.5-4-1 has been the first, now we have also LTS 3.2.30-1
the following kernel versions should released in the same way...

- Starting only from RM2012 and greater:
- it was enabled the build of "cpupower" config and systemd service files
- it was enabled the build of perf tools and the supporting documentation
* userspace utilities are designed to assist with CPU frequency scaling
* Some info:
* http://lwn.net/Articles/433002/
* https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CP ... cy_Scaling
- Obsoled cpufreq / cpufrequtils if cpupower and perf tools replace them

Kernel 3.2.30 for ROSA 2012.0 / 2012.1 & Mandriva 2010 2011 > viewtopic.php?f=38&t=3503

Code: Select all

%changelog

* Sun Sep 30 2012 Nicolo' Costanza <abitrules@yahoo.it> 3.2.30-1
+ update to 3.2.30
- Improved the "nrj" mode and fixed all remaining script build warnings
- Changed CONFIG_NLS_CODEPAGE_437=m to y enabling UEFI boot for 2012.1
- Added use ld.bfd instead default, like Gold, for new binutils 2012.1
- Starting only from RM2012 and greater:
- it was enabled the build of "cpupower" config and systemd service files
- it was enabled the build of perf tools and the supporting documentation

- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Kernel 3.2 for mdv 2010.2, 2011.0, cooker, rosa.lts2012.0, rosa2012.1
- MIB (Mandriva International Backports) - http://mib.pianetalinux.org/
- This is -1 (mainline serie), with official kernel sources and addons,
- instead (-69) will be used for development and experimental flavours
- Yin & Yang (69) release - a very complete but experimental flavours...

i solved my pb with bluetooth and kernel >= 3.2.0 see viewtopic.php?t=3512&p=19751#p19751

now i use 3.4.11 i686 nrj pae witrh mandriva2010.2 i586

can i test cpupower to manage frequencies with this 3.4.11 ?
